To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BENNETT, of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RatchetWrenches,
4 of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in. ratchet-wrenches; and the object I have in view is to provide a wrench of this character which may be conveniently `operated in places where it is difficult to use an ordinary wrench.
The invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail section showingthe sliding pawl in engagement with the ratchet-teeth on the hub of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the wrench. Figs. 4 and 5 are details showing modified means for engaging and moving the sliding pawl.
In all of the drawings, 2 represents the main shank or handle ofthe wrench, which is widened out at its forward end and has a cir cular aperture that receives the hub 3 of the wrench. This hub is seated in the aperture in the main shank, and it is held in position by a plate 4, that is spaced from the main shank by block 5 and secured in position by the bolts 6. The hub 3 is provided with a circumferential rib 7, upon the edge of which are the series of ratchet-teeth S. This rib projects between the face of the main shank 2 and the plate 4, and the hub is thereby held in position.
Supported upon the shank 2 is the sliding pawl 8, provided with a slot 9, in which is arranged a flat spring 10. A stud 11 passes through this slot and is secured in the shank 2, and the head of the stud extends beyond the walls of the slot, thereby holding the pawl in position on the shank. The spring 10 engages the stud 11 and tends to press the forward end of the pawl against the ratchetteeth on the hub of the wrench. A cross-bar or double lever 12, provided with handles 13, is pivoted in the end of the shank 2, and the end of the pawl 8 is pivoted to this lever at one side of the shank 2. The hub 3 is provided with a polygonal opening adapted to iit over a nut or the head of a bolt, and by means of the double lever 12 for the sliding pawl said pawl can be reciprocated and thereby the hub rotated. If it is desired to turn a bolt or nut in the opposite direction, the wrench can be reversed, so that the hub will stand in the opposite direction, and thereby a reverse motion can be given to the hub and to the bolt or nut engaged thereby.
.Instead of using the double lever 12, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, I may mount in the end of the shank 2 a short shaft 14, provided with an eccentric 15, said shaft being provided with a crank 16 and crank-arm 17. This shaft will be held in position by means of a plate 18, suitably secured to the shank. In this instance it will also be advisable to provide a handle 19, projecting downward from the end of the shank 2. (See Fig. 4.) With this construction the wrench will be operated by turning the crank, and thereby through the short shaft and eccentric reciprocating the pawl 8 and rotating the hub of the wrench.
It will be noted that the wrench is exceedingly simple in construction and that the same may be easily operated. A very powerful leverage is obtained on the sliding pawl by means of the double cross-bar 12 or by the rotating eccentric.
The details of construction may be varied without departing from my invention.
I claim as my inventione 1. The combination, in a ratchet-wrench, with a main shank, of a wrench-hub'rotatably mounted inthe end of said shank, and provided with a series of ratchet-teeth arranged circumferentially thereon, a sliding pawl mounted upon said shank and having a slot extending longitudinally therein, a stud passing through said slot and securing said pawl to said shank, the endof said pawl being in engagement with said ratchet-teeth, and a double lever pivoted to the'end of said shaft and having a pivotal connection with the end of said pawl, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a ratchet-wrench, with a main shank, of a wrench-hub rotatably mounted in the end of said shank and provided with a series ofratchet-teeth arranged circumferentially thereon, a plate secured to said shank and engaging said hub, and holding the same in place, with the vratchet-teeth between said plate and said shank, a sliding pawl mounted upon said shank and having a slot extending longitu- IOO IlO
dinally therein, a stud passing through said slot and securing said paWl to said shank, a double lever pivoted to the end of the shank and also having pivoted connection With the end of said paWl, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a ratchet-Wrench, With a main shank, of a Wrench-hub rotatavbly mounted in the end of said shank, and
provided with a series of ratchet-teeth arranged circumferentially thereon, a plate 4' secured to said shank With a space between said plate and said shank to receive said ratchet-teeth, a sliding paWl 8 provided With a longitudinal slot 9, and With a spring 10.
mounted in the end of said shank, and provided With a series of ratchet-teeth arranged circumferentially thereon, a plate 4 secured to said shank with a space between said plate and said shank to receive said ratchetteeth, a sliding pawl 8 provided with a longitudinal slot 9, and With a spring 10 arranged in said slot, a stud ll passing throughvsaid slot and securing said paWl to said shank, said spring being in engagement With said stud, and a lever 12 pivoted to the end of said shank and pivotably connected to the end of' said pawl, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
