ATTORNEYS WITNESSES DAVID C. PIERCE, OF NOWRYTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April '14, 1908.
Application filed November 6, 1907. Serial No. 400,925.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, DAvIp C. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 'Nowrytown, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenche's, of which the following is a specification. This invention is an improvement in Wrenches, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is aside view, and
Fig. 2 a longitudinal view partly in section of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 3
is a detail vertical section on about line 3-3 of Fig.2. Fig. 4 is-an edge view of a portion of thewr'ench, and Fig. 5 is a detail view illus trating a somewhat diiferen-t construction in thefixed jaw C, and the sliding jawD is movwhich the stud forming a pivot for the dog is detachably held to the shding jaw. "The wrench bar A has the handle B, and
' able' upon the bar, the latter being provided with ratchet teeth A for engagement by the pawl of the sliding jaw. The sliding jaw has at itslower end an opening D to slide upon the wrench bar and has an opening D at its upper end and is providedaat said upper end with a wall D which slides along the wrench bar and affords a bearing for one end of a spring 'E, the other end of which bears against the upper end pf the dog F and presses the point F of the dog 'into the ratchet teeth of the wrench bar. I
At its front side the jaw D has an opening D through which the thu 1b piece F of the dog projects and said dog operates within a.
recess D in the sliding jaw D. .This recess D opens laterally at one side of the aw D,
and is closed by a cover plate G rabbeted at G in the side of the recess D and secured by a screw G which screws into a stud H projecting from the base wall D of the recess D -This stud H affords a pivotal support for the'dog F, which pivots midway between its ends ,on the said stud and operates within the recess D being retained by the coverplate G as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing.
in operation, it will be noticed the spring E forces the jaw into locking engagement the cover plate G access may-be conveniently had to the dog and its spring fpr any desired I purpose.
In Fig. 3 the pivot stud H is shown integral with the bottom plate of the recess D for the dog F, while in Fig. 5, the said stud H is made separate from the bottom plate D of the sliding jaw, and is screwed therein, being provided in its outer end with a nick to receive a screw-driver by which it may be ap lied and removed.
t will be noticed that the upper end of the dog moves along the curved surface struck on thearc ofthe circle with the axis of the dog so that the dog is practically in contact at its upper end with the upper end of the sliding jaw and forms a direct connection between the upper end of the sliding jaw and the bearing of the dog against the ratchet teeth of the wrench bar so that the strain upon the wrench jaw is transmitted longitudinally through the dog to the wrench bar in the use of the invention.
I claim'.
. Thewrench herein described, comprising a wall of said recess and havinga threaded socket in its free end, the upper end of said recess being curved on the arc of a circle, a dog pivoted between its ends concentrically with the curved surface and engaging at one end with the ratchet teeth of the wrench bar and moving at its other end along the said curved surface and practically in contact therewith, a spring actuating said dog, a cover plate for the outer end of the laterally opening recesses, and a screw securing said cover plate and threaded in the socket in the free end of the stud, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
