PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. MUSKETT, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
' PIPE-WRENCH- SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,389, dated May 31, 1904..
Application filed August 14, 1903. Serial No. 169,468- (No model.) 7
T on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. MUSKETT, a citizenof the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of 'Lackawanna'and State ofTennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pipe-wrenches.
The present invention relates to that general class of.pipe-wrenches embodying ahandle with a stationary jaw and a movable or adjustable jaw connected to the stationary .jaw
by links, and has for its object the provision of an improved and novel construction of great strength, durability, and simplicity adapted for rapid and easy adjustment and having the jaws self-opening.
Having the foregoing and other not specifically-mentioned objects in view, the invention embraces certain improved and novel arrangements and combinations of parts set forth in detail hereinafter and embodied in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the jaws as opened by the springs to their fullest extent; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the adjustable jaw nearly closed on the rigid jaw; Fig. 3, a section on line :12 m of Fig. "1 looking toward the fixed jaw, and Fig. 4 asection on line y y of Fig. 1 looking toward the movable jaw.
The rigid or fixed jaw 1 is made integral with a handle 2, which is provided with elongated concavities 3 on its opposite sides.
The adjustable or movable jaw 4 is located between and pivoted by a pin 5 to two links 6 and 7, which in turn are pivoted to the opposite sides of the jaw 1 by a pin 8. The two jaws and the link are provided with teeth 9.
The lower end of the adjustable jaw 4 is provided with ears 10 and 11, which are adapted to embrace opposite sides of the handle and i are turned into the concavities 3, so as to engage with the margin thereof.
Projecting from opposite sides of the jaw 1 are studs 12 and 13, which are split and securely receive leaf-springs 1 .1.- and 15, which from the position shown in Fig. 1 in the direotion of the position shown in Fig, 2, thereby securely grasping the pipe, and the greater the pressure on the handle the firmer will be the grip of the jaws on the pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pipe-wrench, the combination. with a stationary jaw and operating-handle connected together, of a movable jaw having a portion thereof engaged with and guided by the handle, a link connecting the movable jaw with the stationary jaw, and a spring cooperating with the link to open the jaws.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination with a stationary jaw and handle connected thereto, of a movable jawhaving a portion thereof engaged with and guided by the handle, a link connecting said jaws to permit relative movement thereof and a spring secured to said sta tionary jaw and bearing against said link.
3. In a pipe-wrench, the combination with a stationary jaw and a handle for operating said jaw, of a movable jaw slidably engaged with said handle, a link pivotally connecting the two jaws, a stud on one of the jaws, and a leaf-spring connected to said stud and bearing against the link.
4E. The herein-described pipe-wrench comprising a stationary jaw, a handle connected thereto, a movable jaw having a portion slid- .ably engagedwith the handle, links pivoted to said jaws, studs projecting from one of the jaws, and leaf-springs secured to said studs and engaged with the links.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, JAMES W. MUSKETT.
