' PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,221, dated October 27, 1885.
Application filed July 24, 1885. Serial No. 172,530. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. SOHRAMM, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches, which improve ment is fully set forth in the'following specification and accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a pipe-wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial section in line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents aside elevation, the side covering-plate of the wrench being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of wrenches generally termec pipewrenches, and it consists of the construction of parts whereby the wrenches are strong, compact, and inexpensive, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A and B represent, respectively, the movable and stationary jaws of a wrench, the jaw B being made integral with the handle 0. In the stock D or part of the tool between the handle and stationary jaw is a recess, E, to receive the pivotal portion A of the movable jaw, the pivots' A thereof being mounted in the side wall of the stock D, and a covering-plate, F, which is screwed or otherwise secured at one end to the jaw B and at the other end to the stock D, it being noticed that the plate F prevents lateral displacement of the jaw A and assists in closing the recess E. The sides of the jaw B and stock D contiguous to the plate F are recessed, forming shoulders G G, between which the plate F is fitted, and with which it is flush, as most clearly seen in Fig. 2. Within the recess E are coiled springs H, which are connected with the movable jaw and the stock D and plate F, respectively, and exert their pressure onsaid jaw, so as to force the same toward the fixed jaw. A single spring may be sufficient for this purpose. The contiguous sides of the shoulders G G and plate F extend in oblique directions, as at J, and the portions of the plate adjacent to the stationary jaw are serrated similarly to said jaw.
It will be seen that the parts are strong and durable. The sides of the jaws and stock are flush, and thus the tool-occupies but little room laterally. The springs H are inclosed, and hence are protected. The movable jaw and the-springs are readily applicable and removable, owing to the plate F. Owing to the oblique shoulders G G and adjacent oblique ends of the plate F, the strain on said plate, due to the portion of a pipe or other article held thereagainst by the movable jaw, (see dotted lines, Fig. 3,) is transmitted to said shoulders G G, which, being solid, are enabled to endure such strain, so that breakage of said plate is avoided. The pivot of the movable jaw is shown integral therewith, making a stronger structure. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench having a stationary jaw and a stock, and a movable jaw pivoted in a recess of said stock and provided with springs located in said recess and secured to said movable jaw and said stock, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the handle 0, having the fixed jaw B and stock D, in combination with the movable jaw A, pivoted in the recess E of said stock, plate F, secured to said stock D and jaw B, and springs H, located in said recess E and secured to the jaw A and stock D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A pipe-wrench consisting of the handle 0, having recessed stock D and fixed jaw B integral therewith, movable jaw A, pivoted in the recess E, and plate F, secured to said stock and fixed jaw, and having a bearing for the axis of said movable jaw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4.. In a pipe-wrench, the handle 0, having fixed jaw B, and recessed stock D, having shoulders G G, in combination with movable jaw A, pivoted in recess E, andplate F, having oblique ends, and springs H, connected to said movable jaw and stock, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
