JAKOB CASPAR WALIGURSKY, OF PALATKA, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
masses.
Application filed June 22, 1915. Serial No. 35,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAKoB CAsrAR WALI- GURsKY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Palatka, in the county of Iron and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a quick action wrench having one of its jaws provided with a resiliently mounted pivoted serrated face adapted for engaging the work and which cooperates with an oppositely positioned face whereby an initial gripping of the work positioned therebetween is insured.
A further object is to provide a wrench having a uniform exterior surface and with solid jaw faces at one side thereof and combinedinterchangeable and resiliently pivoted faces at its opposite side whereby the wrench is adapted for use either as a pipe wrench or an ordinary. nut wrench.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, portions of the same being broken away. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof partially broken away along the central longitudinal axis of the handle. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line IVIV of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line V-V of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the jaw plate receiving portion of the wrench body with the plate removed.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the wrench body 10 is illustrated as provided with an operatin handle 11, while the said body is provi ed with a central longitudinal bore substantially rectangular in cross section and terminating at the end face 13 of the said wrench body while the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1915.
other end of the bore communicates with an open T-shaped slot 1 1 formed transversely through the said body.
A head 15 is provided with a projecting shank 16 which. terminates in a threaded shaft 17 and the said shaft is slidably inserted within the bore 12 and with the threaded shaft extending within the slot 14:, while a turn nut 18 is threaded upon the shaft 17 and is located within the transverse portionl9 of the said T-shaped slot 14.
From this construction it will be evident that upon a turning of the adjusting nut 18 the shaft 17 and shank 16 will be moved either inwardly or outwardly of the wrench body, thus communicating a corresponding movement to the head 15, relatively of the body face 13. v
The head 15 is provided at one end with the rigid jaw 20 lying opposite to the face 13 of the wrench body and cooperating therewith for engaging the work when the said head is moved under the influence of the said adjusting nut 18. A removable jaw 21 is secured by means of a removable pin 22 to the head 15 at a point opposite to the rigid jaw 20 of the said head, while such jaw 21 is provided with a serrated inner face 23 lying opposite to a portion of the end face 13 of the jaw body which is provided with an angularly stepped or cut away portion or recess 26. The recess 26 has its inner portion provided with a curved side 27 and its outer portion provided with an offset slanting side or bottom 28, the latter terminating in the straight outer wall 29 of the wrench body. A substantially wedge-shaped lug 30 is mounted upon the said body wall 29 and has its outer face 31 formed arcuate concentric with the pivotal opening 32 transversely arranged through the said lug while the adjacent portion of the lug extends above the recess bottom 28 as at 33 and substan tially to the level of the adjacent edge 34 of the curved side 27 of the recess. A jaw plate 35 is provided having spaced lugs 36 and adapted for the reception of the lug 30 therebetween, a pivot pin 37 being provided through the perforation 32 and also through the lugs of the'jaw plate. It will be noted that the jaw plate 35 is formed upon one side thereof conforming in shape to the configuration of the aforementioned recess while curved leaf springs 38 are secured to the recess bottom 28 and against which the jaw Copies of this patent may be obtainedfor plate'resiliently seats. The opposite side of the jaw plate is serrated as at 39 and is cooperatively positioned opposite the jaw face 23.
The plate 35 is provided with a socket 40 between the plate lugs 36 and conformingto the shape of the lug 30 while the said plate is adapted to be swung upon the pivot pin 37 in an arcuate path and to the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 for purposes of cleaning the faces of the underlying It will thus be seen that the action of the springs 38 upon the jaw plate is to allow a pressure upon the plate face 39 by the Work to intially compress the springs38 as well as to depress the plate 35 and thus afford an initial gripping of the work between the serrated faces of the two jaw members 21 and 35,. f i
The complete operation of the device will be apparent from the above detailed description thereof, it being noted that in moving the work as well as for designating faces therefrom.
What I claim as new is A wrench comprising a body portion having a fixed jaw at one side thereof, a movable jaw cooperating with said fixed jaw, said fixed jaw having a stepped recess therein formed with curved and plain bottom portions and confronting the said movable jaw, a substantially wedge-shaped lug centrally positioned upon the plain side of said body portion forwardly of said recess, the said lug projecting above said plain bottom portion of the recess and having a curved outer face and a transverse perforation therethrough, a jaw plate substantially conforming in shape to the said recess and pivoted to the said lug and having a bottom socket in register therewith when the jaw plate is positioned within the said recess, the said jaw plate adapted to be swung on its pivot completely out of said recess, spaced leaf springs secured within said recess and resiliently engaging beneath the jaw plate when the latter is in gripping position in the recess and shifting means for the said movable jaw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
