No. 595,796. Patented De0.21,189'7.
NITED STATES ATENT rrrcn.
LE GRAND TERRY, OF HORSEHEADS, NEW YORK.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,796, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed May 22, 1897. Serial No. 637,761. (No model.)
T0 at whom it ntcty concern.-
Be it known that I, LE GRAND TERRY, a resident of Horseheads, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and more particularly to such as are adapted for use on pipes, but which may also be used on nuts, &c., the object of the invention being to provide a wrench of simple construction by means of which a pipe or other device can be forcibly gripped with the expenditure of a minimum amount of power applied by the user.
A further object is to so construct a wrench that the shank of one jaw will be permitted to have a longitudinal sliding movement and also a pivotal movement on a fulcrum located adjacent to the lower end of said jaw.
A further object is to so construct a wrench of the character above mentioned which shall be comparatively cheap to manufacture and yet be strong, durable, and effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, ashereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View illustrating my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a crosssection. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the washer. Fig. 5 is a modified form of washer.
A represents a bar the lower end of which is made to form a handle 1, and its upper end is made with a rigid serrated jaw 2, disposed at right angles to said bar A. An elongated yoke B is disposed on the barAimmediately below the jaw 2 for the accommodation of the shank 4 of a movable jaw 5. The yoke B will preferably be made by bending a plate of sheet metal (preferably heavy sheet-steel) upon itself, so as to form two parallel members 6 6, adapted to embrace the bar A, the free edges of said members 6 6 being rigidly secured to said bar by welding, riveting, or in any other suitable manner.
At a point between its ends the elongated yoke B is made with a mortise or recess 7 for the accommodation of a nut 8, through which the screw-threaded shank of the movable jaw 5 passes, and a loose washer 9, having shoulders 10 to rest on shoulders 11 in the mortise or recess '7.
If desired, the washer 9 may be provided with lugs 12, Fig. 4, to lie against the outer faces of the respective members of the yoke.
The hole in the washer 9 is made sufficiently larger than the diameter of the screwthreaded shank of the movable jaw so as to permit said shank to pass freely through it.
It will be observed that the space within the yoke B is elongated in cross-section, so as to permit the movable jaw and its shank to have lateral play or movement, and said jaw will be maintained in its normal position by means of a spring 13, secured at one end to the bar A within the yoke B, and bearing at its free end against the inner face 14 of the shank of the movable jaw.
From the construction and arrangement of parts above described it will be seen that the movable jaw is adapted to be moved longitudinally of the wrench and to also have a pivotal or swinging movement in the washer 9 as a fulcrum. The employment of this washer prevents the nut from being moved into contact with the wrench-handle.
My improvements are very simple in construction and are effectual, in all respects, in the performance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench, the combination with a bar having a handle at one end and a fixed jaw at the other end, of a yoke on said bar for the reception of the shank of a movable jaw, said yoke having a mortise, a movable jaw having its shank projecting into said yoke, a nut in said mortise through which the screwthreaded portion of said shank passes, and a washer also in said mortise and serving as'a fulcrum for said shank, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a bar having a handle at one end and a fixed jaw at the other end, of a yoke between the ends of said bar, said yoke being elongated in cross-section, and having a mortise at a point between its ends, a movable jaw having a shank projecting into said yoke and adapted to have a sliding and a lateralniovement therein, a nut in said mortise through which the screw threaded portion of the shank passes, a washer also in said mortise and serving as a fulcrum for said shank, and a spring secured to said bar and bearing against said shank whereby to maintain the movable jaw in its normal position, substantially as set forth.
3. In a Wrench, the combination with a bar having a handle at one end and a fixed jaw at the other'end, of a yoke constructed by bendin g a plate of metal upon itself, the free edges of the respective members of said yoke being secured to said bar in rear or above the fixed jaw, said yoke having a mortise, a movable jaw having a shank to project into said yoke and having a sliding and pivotal movement therein, a nut in said mortise through which the screw threaded portion of said shank passes, a washer also mounted in said mortise and serving as a fulcrum for said shank and a spring for maintaining said shank and jaw thereon, in their normal positions, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witness LE GRAND TERRY.
Vitnesses:
