SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,987, dated January 20,1391.` Application filed October 25, 1890. Serial No. 369,269. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, SILvANUs HUssEv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brant, in ,the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovem ent in Vrenches, of which the followin is aspeciication.
My invention relates more especially to wrenches which are provided with several sets of jaws, so that the same may be employed for grasping objects of different shape or countersunk as well as projecting parts.
One object of my invention is to so construct the wrench that the same may be adjusted at a point remote from the jaws, so as to prevent soiling of the hands, which is almost unavoidable in using ordinary wrenches having the adjusting devices located near' the jaws, the latter being apt to become soiled by Contact with greasy nuts or other parts.
My invention has the further object to provide the wrench with a reliable gripping attachment whereby the same may be employed for grasping pipes and other round objects.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectionl in line :t oc, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section in line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the movable jaw in line .e z, Fig. 3.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several ligures.
A represents the handle of the wrench, and B is the bar or shank connected with the handle. The handle is preferably open or slotted lengthwise to render it lighter and provided at its inner end on one side with a loop or socket b, arranged in a plane parallel with the handle. This socket is formed at its inner end with an ear o. The inner portion of the shank B passes through the loop or socket of the handle, and is rigidly secured in the same by a rivet or bolt c passing' through the shank and the socket, and a rivet or bolt c passing through the shank and the ear of the socket.
D represents a fixed jaw arranged at the outer end of the shank B, and E is a movable jaw sliding upon the rectangular shank toward and from the fixed jaw. The fixed and movable jaws are preferably double, as shown, and each jaw is provided with a laterallyprojecting lug f. The opposing faces of these lugs are preferably provided with V-shaped recesses or other suitable gripping-surfaces, as shown, so that the same may be employed as auxiliary jaws for grasping count-ersunk nuts or bolt-heads.
G represents a rotating adjusting screw or bolt extending from the stationary jaw D to the outer end of the handle A, and whereby the movable jaw is adjusted. The adjustingscrew passes through the handle and the lugs or auxiliary jawsfof the main jawsD E, and is held against lengthwise movement by a head h, formed at the outer end of the screw and bearing against the liXed jaw D, and a thumb-piece or knob t', secured to the opposite end of the screw and bearing against the adjacent outer end of the handle. The lug or auxiliary jaw of the main movable jaw is provided with la screw-threaded opening, through which the threaded portion of the screw passes, and the handle and lugs f of the fixed jaw are provided with smooth openings in which the plain portions of the screw turn. Upon turning the knob or thumbpiece i in either direction the movable jaw is caused to approach or recede from the xed Yjaw in the ordinary manner.
By operating the adj Listing-screw from the outer end of the handle remote from the jaws the hands are not so apt to become soiled as they are when the adjusting device is arranged near the jaws, as in ordinary wrenches of this kind.
If desired, the adj usting-screw may be provided with a milled adj Listing-wheel lain addition to the thumb-piece t', so that when the wrench is applied to parts which do not soil the jaws the adj listing-wheel may be employed instead of the knob.
By arranging the adjusting-screw centrally between the double jaws D E and extending the same from end to end of the wrench the strain upon the parts of the wrench is equalized and the wrench is materially strengthcned.
L represents a movable gripping piece or bar arranged upon the sliding jaw E, and designed to be used in conjunction with the ad- IOO jacent stationary jaw D for grasping pipes or round bars. The opposing stationary jaw is provided with an angular or V-shaped face, as shown, to obtain a 'firm grip. The gripping-bar L is arranged in an upright chamber or recess M, formed in the movable jaw E, and is provided at its lower end with a spherical knuckle m, which is seated in a correspondingly-shaped socket m,forined in the bottom of the recess, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The recess or chamber' M opens on its inner side into the aperture in the movable jaw, through which the shank B passes, and is made fiarin g outwardly to give the gripping-bar the requisite play in the recess. In its normal position the gripping-bar rests against the outer wall of its chamber and inclines toward the shank B.
Upon adjusting the wrench to the pipe or bar to be turned and turning the wrench in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4: the gripping-bar M is caused to move inwardly toward the shank B and tightens its grip upon the bar or pipe. The shank B closes the inner side of the chamber M and contines the handle of the gripping-bar in its socket. In assembling the parts the gripping-bar is introduced into its recess in the movable jaw before the latter is applied to the shank and before the latter is secured to the handle. The shank is then passed through the movable jaw and secured to the handle.
By my improved construction the grippingbar has a wide smooth bearing in the movable jaw, and the use of a rivet or pivot-pin, which is liable to be broken, is avoided.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, with the handle and the shank provided with a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw sliding toward and from the fixed jaw, and an adjusting-screw terminating at the outer portion of the handle, and whereby the movable jaw is operated, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the handle and the shank provided with a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw sliding toward and from the fixed jaw,and an adj Listing-screwextending through the handle andthe movable jaw, and whereby the latter is operated, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the handle and the shank provided with a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw sliding toward and from the fixed 5. The combination, with the handle and the shank having a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw guided on said shank, auxiliary jaws arranged, respectively, on said fixed and movable jaws and projecting laterally therefrom, and an adj listing-screw whereby the movable jaw is operated, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the handle and A the shank having a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw guided on said shank, auxiliary jaws arranged, respectively, on said fixed and movable jaws and projecting laterally therefrom, and an adjusting-screw held against lengthwise movement and extending through said auxiliary jaws and the handle, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with the handle having a socket arranged in a plane parallel with the handle, of a shank carrying a jaw and secured in the socket of the handle, substantially as set forth.
8. In a wrench, the combination, with the fixed jaw, of the movable jaw havingachamber or recess provided with a spherical socket, and a movable gripping-bar arranged in said recess and having a spherical knuckle seated in said socket, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination,.with the shank of the wrench having a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw having an aperture, whereby it slides upon the shank, and a chamber or recess opening into said aperture and provided with a spherical cavity, and a gripping-bar arranged in said chamber and having a spherical head seat-ed in said cavity, substantially as set forth.
