WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 15, 1 903.
No. 729,747. Patented June 2, i903.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- JOSEPH H. FLANIGAN, OF SHEFFIELD, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE T.
MGREGOR, WALTER S. WHITE, AND A. L. CHITTY, OF SHEFFIELD, ALA- BAMA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,747, dated June 2, 1903. Application filed January l 1903. Serial No. 139,192. (No model-1 {1,0 w/wm y concern! 'cate with the cavity 7. In the said cavity is I Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. FLANIGAN, a arranged a block 9, on which is formed the citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Shefworking face 3 which is adapted to act in field, in the county of Colbert and State of conjunction with the working face 1 of the 5 Alabama, have invented certain new and usefixed jaw 1. 5 5
ful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do de- 011 the block 9 are formed laterally-prd clare the following to be a full, clear, and exjecting lugs 10, which are adapted to enter act description of the invention, such as will and move in the slots 8, whereby the block 9 enable others skilled in the art to which it apand face 3" are adapted to move in and out r0 pertains to make and use the same. to have a slight rocking movement. An ad- This invention relates to improvements in justing-screw 12 passes up through a threaded Wrenches, and has for its object to provide a opening formed inthe lower wall of the cavcornbined nut and pipe wrench which will be ity 7, and the end of the screw 12 is adapted simple in construction and strong and dura to impinge against the inner end of the block :5 ble in use. 9, so that by working the screw in or out the Another object is to produce a wrench of block 9 and working face 3" may be moved this character which can be quickly adjusted in or out of the cavity 7 and adjusted to the and positively held, doing away with the body which is to be turned. The slight rockthreaded shank and traveling nut so comin g motion of the block 9 will allow the wrench 2o monly used in wrenches of this form. to be slipped around the body in one direc- With these and other objects in view the tion without acting upon the same; but when invention consists in the construction and armoved in the opposite direction the working rangements of the parts, as will be hereinafface 3" will bind and cause the body to be ter more fully described and claimed, referturned. v

The said detent consists of the toothjaw; 4, the pivoted detent; 5, the handle of engaging end or finger 4, which is fixed to or said detent, and 6 the wrench-handle. integral with a right-angularly-disposed yoke The jaw 1 is preferably formed integral at, in which is formed a longitudinally-dis- 3 5 with the shank2 and is of double form-that posed elongated opening through which is is, it hastwo working faces 1 and 1 aradapted to pass the shank of the wrench. A ranged on each side of the said shank, the pivot-pin passes through the shank and working face 1 being curved to adapt the through the sides of the yoke 43 and pivotally same for engagement with a pipe or other connects the detent 4 to said shank. The

45 to act in conjunction with the face 1 of the \Vhen the sliding jaw is closed against the 5 fixed jaw. The part of the jaw having the fixedjawof the wrench, the detent-handle will working face 3 has formed therein a cavity lie in juxtaposition to the wrench-handle,
7, opening through the top and outer edge which is slightly reduced on this side to allow thereof, and in sides of the jaw are formed the same to engage the hollowed or concavcd 5o oppositely-arrangcd slots 8, which communiside of the detent-handle. 10o
In practice when it is desired to adjust the wrench to a nut or pipe the fixed jaw is engaged with the same and the sliding jaw is then moved up until it also engages. The wrench-handle and the detent-handle are now both tightly grasped, which will cause the detent-finger to engage one of the teeth on the sliding jaw, whereby said jaw will be firmly held against the object and cannot slip or work back as long as the handles are held together.
The working faces of both jaws are provided with the usual serrations for gripping the objects with which they are engaged.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation. of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combined nut and pipe wrench, the combination with a fixed jaw, having two working faces, of a sliding jaw having two corresponding working faces, one of which faces is pivotally connected to said sliding jaw, an adjusting-screw carried by said jaw whereby an independent adjustment may be given said pivoted working face, an inclined toothed surface formed on said sliding jaw, a pivoted detent adapted to engage said inclined toothed surface whereby said sliding jaw may be held in adjusted positions, and a handle fixed to said detent for operating the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- JOSEPH II. FLANIGAN.
