WRENCH.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osnrrr C. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at MoIlhaney, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wrenches, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a wrench which can be quickly adjusted to any size nut and which will firmly plamp the nut for turning it on or off the Jolt.

Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench comprising a rigid jaw and a pivoted jaw, the latter being adjustable toward and from the rigid jaw by means of a yoke and a threaded rod connected thereto for moving said yoke to open and close the jaws.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench made in accordance with my invention, and showing in dotted lines one of the positions of the pivoted jaw. Fig. 2 is a central. longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken through the yoke and the jaws of the device, and looking downwardly.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a handle provided with an integral rigid jaw 2 having a longitudinal groove 3 therein. The movable jaw 4 is pivotally connected at 5 upon the handle 1 and is also provided with a longitudinal groove 6. One or both of the jaws may be provided with teeth 7. A metal yoke 8 extends around the jaws 2 and 4 and is provided on the inside with studs 9 and 10 which engage the grooves 3 and 6 in the jaw members 2 and 4. Extending across between the jaw members and connected to the yoke 8 is a stirrup 10 which is connected to the yoke 8 by means of a rivet or pin 11.

Mounted to rotate in the stirrup 10 is a threaded rod 12, said rod extending into a -recess 13 in the handle 1. Mounted on the rod 12 is a milled nut 14 which extends through an opening 15 in the handle and beyond the opposite surfaces thereof.

The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows :By rotating the nut 14 the yoke 8 is moved longitudinally of the jaw members 2 and 4, and the studs 9 and 10 travel in the grooves 8 and 6, thus opening and closing the jaws 2 and 4 and adjusting them to any desired size of nut. After the nut has been clamped the handle 1 is operated for turning the nut on or off the bolt.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that my invention is of simple construction, can be quickly adjusted to clamp a nut and is very strong, durable and eflicient for its purpose.

I claim 1. A wrench comprising a handle, a rigid jaw on said handle, said jaw being provided with a longitudinal groove, a jaw pivoted to the handle and provided with a longtiudinal groove, a yoke provided with inwardly projecting studs to engage said grooves, and means for adjusting said yoke longitudinally of the jaw members for opening and closing the same.

2. A wrench comprising a handle, a rigid jaw thereon, said jaw being provided with a longitudinal groove, a jaw pivoted to the handle and provided with a longitudinal groove, a yoke surrounding said jaw members, a stirrup connected to said yoke, a threaded rod pivotally mounted in the stirrup, and a milled nut connected to said rod and mounted in an opening in the handle.
