Description

J. DOLAN.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 7, 1913.
1,082,851. Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
7 "7 I I 75 61 Z /6 q 6 ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DOLAN, OF DUQUESNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN DOLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duquesne, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement upon the patent granted to me August 27, 1912, Number 1,036,585.
The object of the invention is to improve the wrench especially by making the removable jaw reversible, thereby converting onewrench into wrenches of two types.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, parts being shown in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a plate with a pivoted jaw, shown partly in section and with the aw in open position. Fig. 4: is a section on the line 1-lof Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the removable jaw.
In these drawings, I have shown parts similar to those illustrated in the patent above referred to, with slight changes.
The wrench comprises a handle 1, shank 2, integral jaw 41, and a reversible, removable jaw 5. The shank 2 is provided with transverse threads 3 and is connected to the handle 1 by means of the U-shaped plate 6. This plate 6 is bent into U-shape forming the inwardly bent bow portion 7 upon the under side of which the shank 2 rocks.
In order to provide a suitable bearing for the underside of the shank 2 to rock upon, I form upon the upper and lower rear portions of the jaw 5 transversely arranged ribs 19. I also provide the guides 9 and employ also the transverse ribs 10 as shown in my previous patent. It will be noted from the Specification of Letters Patent.

drawings, however that in said patent the lower edge of the plate 6 with its extension 8 forms a straight line parallel with the lower edge of the handle 1. I now construct said plate and extension with said lower edge slightly curved so that it extends below the handle, and forms rockers upon which the entire wrench can rock when necessary. This construction also renders less likely the breaking of the handle 1. The handle is recessed as shown at 11 to receive the coil spring 12 and the reduced portion of the jaw 5 fits within said shaped plate and secured therein by means of a pivot pin 13, and suitable screws 14;. By removing these the jaw can be readily reversed. On its inner face the jaw is recessed at 15, and provided with a lug 16 to which a spring plate 17 is pivoted. The spring 12 presses the free end of the plate 17 against the nut 18 working upon the shank 2. These parts all work in the manner described in my previous patent.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a handle, a shank having a jaw carried thereby, a U-shaped plate secured to said handle and embracing said shank, the bow portion of the plate being bent inwardly for said shank to rock upon, and a reversible, removable jaw carried by said U-shaped plate, said jaw having upper and lower transverse ribs adapted to be alternately engaged by the under face of the shank, said shank being rockably held between said bow portion and one of said ribs.
