AUGUST CHATO, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, Ancusr CHATo, a citi zen of the United States, residing at North Side, Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification. a 1
This invention relates to improvements in self acting wrenches and has for its object to provide a self acting wrench in which the manipulation of the handleqwill operate the wrench.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a sinuous member adapted to operate a sliding jaw and to form the handle by means of which the wrench is operated.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a self acting wrench having means whereby a sliding jaw may be automatically locked in a closed position.
Wi h the above and other objects in view which will be more specifically explained in the following specification, I have invented the wrench illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved wrench, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, partly broken away, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view partly in elevation and partly broken away of a modified form of the wrench, Fig. 4 is a rear end elevational view thereof, Fig. 5 is a detail top plan view of a pawl, Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line AA of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a section taken on line BB of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views in the drawings in which- 1 is a bifurcated shank having arms2and3 and a fixed aw 4. Slidable between the members 2 and 3 is a sliding jaw 5 having a slot 7, formed by the wings 8 and 9 and the arcuate inner wall 10 upon which is slidably seated the semicircular portion 11 of the lever handle 12. The 5 is held in place between the arms 2 and 3 by means of the rear portion 5' which is of the same width as said jau and is slidable against the rear surfaces of the arms 2 and'3. The wings 8 and 9 are slidable against the forward sur faces of the arms 2 and 3. 'The handle 12 has an arm 16 which is pivoted at 6 between Specification of Letters Patent.
Continuation of application Serial No. 612,013, filed March 3, 1911.
Serial No. 76 1. 1.77.
Patented Apr. 141, 191 1.
This application filed April 30, 1913.
the back ends 14 0f the right angularly disposed ears 15 of the arms 2 and 3. The member 11 is rectangular in cross section whereby bearing surfaces 18 and 10 are provided.
Pivoted between the wings 8 and 9 is an eccentrically mounted pin 17 which bears normally against the arcuate inner surface 18 of the member 11, said member being slidable between said wall 10 and pin 17,
whereby the movement of said lever causes the opening or closing of the jaw 5 according to the direction of movement of the handle 12. Pressingathe handle 12 rearwardly ofthe jaw 4 causes the member 11 to bear against the jaw 5 and force it outward. The weighted handle 21 will cause the cocentric portion 20 of the pin 17 to bear against the surface 18 and on any lightening of pressure on the handle 12 will cause the member 17 to wedge or bind against the member 11 whereby it will be held in fixed position until the member 17 is rotated by means of the handle 21 which may readily be turned after slight pressure is brought against the handle 16. By fulcruming the lever out of line with the plane of travel of the sliding aw 5, a greater opening between the two jaws may be had, thus requiring a shorter shank than would be necessary if the lever were pivoted to the arms 2 and 3 proper, as the sliding jaw may be brought up to the very end of the shank. The shorter the shank the stronger the wrench.
The sliding jaw 5 is provided with a re duced portion 22 whereby the jaw is held in a perfect alinement with the arms 2 and 3.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I show a modified form of the device in which the ends 23 of the arms 2-1 are provided with teeth 25 against which the dog 26 pressed by the spring 26 is adapted to lock whereby the jaws 27 and 28 will be held locked against a nut or other article. The dog 26 has bifurcated arms 29 "which straddle the lever 30 and are pivoted thereto at 31, The wings 32 of the jaw 28 are connected by a member 33 having a convex surface 31 conforming to the arc of the concave surface 35 of the jaw 28 whereby an arcuate passage 36 is provided for the semicircular member 37 to operate in. A stop pin 38 is provided on the wings 32 to engage the enlarged head 39 whereby the member 37 is prevented from becoming disconnected with the jaw 28.
Having now described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is 1. The described wrench consisting of a shank having a fixed jaw, an elongated slot, a pair of right angularly disposed lugs pro jecting in a direction opposing said jaw, a jaw having a head movable in said slot and having an arcuate opening therein, a handle having a lug pivoted to the ends of said first lugs, said handle having an arcuate extension operable in said arcuate opening where by said second jaw is movable and means whereby said shank and handle may be held in locked relation.
2. The described wrench consisting of a shank having a fixed jaw, an elongated slot, a pair of right angularly disposed lugs projecting in a direction opposing said jaw, a jaw having a head movable in said slot and having an arcuate opening therein, a handle having a lug pivoted to the ends of said first lugs, said handle having an arcuate extension operable in said arcuate opening whereby said second jaw is movable, and
means whereby said shank and handle may be held in locked relation, said means consisting of a dog mounted on said handle.
3. The described wrench consisting of a shank having a fixed jaw, an elongated slot, a pair of right angularly disposed lugs projecting in a direction opposing said jaw, a jaw having a head movable in said slot and having an arcuate opening therein, a handle having a lug pivoted to the ends of said first lugs, said handle having an arcuate extension operable in said arcuate opening whereby sald second aw is movable, means whereby said shank and handle may be heldand means whereby said shank and handle may be held in locked relation.
5. The described wrench consisting of a shank having a fixed jaw, an elongated slot, a jaw having a head movable in said slot and having an opening therein, a handle pivoted to said shank, said handle having an arcuate extension operable in said opening whereby said second jaw is movable, said handle being in alinement with said arcuate extension, and an arcuate surface on said movable jaw whereby said extension may directly contact said movable jaw during the entire course of its travel.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' AUGUST GHATO.
