PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,761, dated December 6, 1904.
Application filer. November 19, 1903. Serial No. 181,782. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE OLANS SAMP- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bue, in the county of Nelson and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved wrench particularly adapted for use as a pipe-wrench and which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a wrench constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in whiel1- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a wrench made according to my invention, and Fig. 2 a plan view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a wrench-handle (4, having a flattened and elongated end member a which in the form of construction shown is provided with three projecting lugs or ears a I also provide a wrench member 7), which is preferably made of steel and which is flat in cross-section and the length of which is approximately twice the width thereof, and said wrench member is provided at one end with two lugs or ears 6, which fit between the lugs or ears (0 of the handle member a in the manner of a hinge, and through the lugs or cars a and b are passed a hinge, pin, or bolt 0. The wrench member 6 is also provided at one side with a spring-metal plate d, and one end of the hinge, pin, or bolt 0 is provided with a head 0 and the other is screw-threaded, as shown at c, and the plate (Z is provided with a corresponding hole, through which the screw-threaded end of the hinge, pin, or bolt 0 passes, and by turning said hinge, pin, or bolt the plate cl may be caused to operate as a brake, so as to hold the wrench member 7) at any desired angle with reference to the handle a.
The wrench member I) is provided with a V- shaped opening a, forming separate jaws c and c, and one of these jaws is provided with transverse serrations or teeth a.
The operation is similar to that of other wrenches of this class and will be readily understood without further description thereof.
One of the chief features of this invention is in the manner of hinging the wrench member .71 to the handle a, whereby said wrench member may be held at any desired angle to said handle.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrench, comprising a wrench member having jaws the opposite sides of which are parallel, said member being also provided with projecting lugs or ears, and a handle member provided with corresponding lugs or ears, the outer surface of the outer lugs or cars being flush with the parallel sides of said jaws, said wrench and said handle member being connected by a bolt passed through the lugs or cars of each, and a spring secured to the outer side of one of said jaws and adapted to bear on the corresponding side of one of the lugs or cars of the handle and through which said bolt is also passed, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of November, 1903.
