- 0. P. SWANSON.
NUT LOCK.
Patented 1390.22, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OLOF P. SIVANSON, OF JOBS, OHIO.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 573,800, dated December 22, 1896.
Application filed July 1,1896. Serial. No. 597,753. (No model.)
To all wiz/0771, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF I). SWANSON, of Jobs, in the county of IIocking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention pertains to nut-locks, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device for holding the nuts of rail-bolts from working loose and at the same time not to so lock the same as to prevent their being turned by a wrench.A
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my device in position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the lock. Fig. itis a similar view of the under side of the nut.
A designates ametal plate, which is adapted to bear atly against the iish-plate of a railway structure and embrace the rail-bolts B, as shown. The plate is slotted inward at O from each bolt-embracing opening, and is also recessed centrally and in line with the slots C, as indicated at D. A spring rod or bolt E is extended longitudinal the plate A, the same extending over the slot G and depression D, with its ends projected nearly to the bolt-openings. Clip or yoke F is passed around rod E from the inner side of the plate through depression D, and by this means the rod or bolt is held securely in position.
Nuts Gfor bolts B are provided upon their inner or under sides with the radial grooves II, and as the extremities of rod E are sprung outward slightly, as indicated at II', said outwardly-sprun g extremities will engage the inner surface of the nuts when the same are run down upon the bolts and will take in grooves II, so that to move the nuts in either direction when engaged by the bolt or rod will require considerable more force than will be exerted thereon by the natural tendency of the nuts to work loose.
Slots C provide ample room for the rod or bolt E to bow backward when depressed by the tightly-screwed nut.
The device here shown and described is adapted for use in holding two nuts from turning, the same being of double form; but I do not desire to limit myself specifically to this arrangement, as it may be made singly or for holding only one nut from turning, if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of plate A formed with bolt-passages, the plate being formed with slots C which extend toward each other from said bolt-passages, spring-rod F secured to the outer surface of the portion of the plate separating the ends of slots C, said rod extending in line with the slots and its ends adapted to depress backward therein, the rod extremities being adapted to engage the inner surface of the bolt-nuts for the purpose, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of plate A formed with bolt-passages, slots C extended toward each other from said passages but separated and uncommunicating, spring-rod F secured midway its ends to the portion of plate A separating slots C, the extremities of the rod extending parallel with the slots and adapted to be depressed thereinto, the bolts, and the nuts for said bolts formed with depressions on their inner faces, where they are adapted to engage the extremities of the spring-rod when run upon the bolt, for the purpose substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of the bolts, the plate adapted to embrace the same, said plate being slotted in line with the bolts, and also formed with the central recess, a rod arranged on the outer side of the plate in line with the slots and recess, the clip extended through the recess for holding the rod in position, the extremities of the rod being sprung outward slightly and extending nearly to the bolts, and the nuts having the radial grooves .upon their under sides which are adapted to be engaged by the extremities of the rod, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLOF P. SIVANSON.
