Application tiled Hatch 9, 31.916.1 Serial No. 13,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, Henman ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Donnybrook, in the county of Ward, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pliers; and li do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rllhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in pliers or the like, and is particularly directed. to the provision of such a device wherein a relatively great leverage is obtained.
The object of the present invention resides in the provision of a pair of pliers or the like having its parts so arranged that a relatively great amount of leverage is obtained without materially complicating the structure thereof or causing it to lose any of the advantages normally possessed by such a device.
lt is also the object to provide such a device wherein the shearing strain normally imposed on the pivot of the jaws is distributed in such manner as to substantially `strengthen the structure of the device.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, and formation and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughont the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of pliers constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved pliers are shown as comprising a shank portion 5 having one end bent laterally as at 6 to form the fixed jaw of the tool, this xed jaw being preferably 'concaved and provided with teeth 7 adjacent its inner end so that it may I ,more readily grip a section of pipe or the like. The shank is slotted at 8 for the major portion of its length. Pivoted at 9 in this slot is the movable jaw l0, which is provided inwardly with a concave toothed portion ll coacting with the portion 7 of the fixed jaw. The other end of the shank is offset toward the jaws and extended to provide a handle 12. For operating the movable jaw, a second handle 13 is provided which has one end laterally bent at 14 and which has its angle portion pivoted at l5 in the slot of the shank 5 with its lateral extension 14 disposed parallel to the movable jaw. A air of links 16 pivotally connect the end o this extension and the intermediate portion of the movable jaw.
From the foregoing it is seen that a simple tool has been provided which is' durable in use and which possesses a relatively great leverage.
Although the jaws have been shown as a specific form of pliers, it is seen that any type of jaws may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance the jaws may have their ends bent to form pincers.
at is claimed is:
l. A tool of the class described comprising' a shank member having one end extended to form a handle, a fixed jaw on said shank; a movable jaw pivoted to said shank, a second handle member pivoted to the shank, and a link pivotally connecting said second handle member and the movable jaw.
2. A tool of the class described comprising a shank member, one end of said shank being odset and extended to form a handle, a fixed jawon said shank, a movable jaw pivoted to said shank, a second handle member pivoted to the shank adjacent said odset,
and laterally directedadj acent4 thereto and a link pivotally connecting said lateral portion and the movable jaw. lin testimony whereof, li aiiix my signa'- ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
