Description
W. G. JACKSON.
CASING TONGS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 22, 1912 1,046,596; I Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
ATTORNEY UNITED STATE$ PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM G. JACKSON, 0F MARICOPA, CALIFORNIA.
CASING-TONGS.
Application filed April 22, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maricopa, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casing-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in.
casing tongs used especially for screwing and unscrewing the separate sections of well casings and pipe lines.
The object of my invention is to provide casing tongs the lever of which can be attached to a reciprocating engine, and which can be very quickly and readily adapted for sections of all sizes.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the casing tongs shown in use on a casing section; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the main body of the tongs, having upper and lower plane parallel surfaces, and formed with an aperture 2 extending from one side to the other midway between said surfaces. At a central part of said aperture there is pivoted therein, by a pivot bolt 3 passing entirely through the body, a lever 4, the aperture being made flaring at both ends to permit of the vibration of the lever therein. Pivotally attached to the outer end of the short arm of the lever is a chain 6, preferably of the form common in sprocket chains, that is, consisting of double and single links pivoted together by pivots 7. It differs, however, from the ordinary sprocket chain in that each pivot at one terminal portion of the chain projects a considerable distance on each side of the link.
The body of the tongs is extended on one side of said pivot and is formed with a groove 8 1n the outer side of said extension, which is thus in effect formed into two jaws. The inner side of said extension is concaved to fit against the outer surface of the casing 13 and is formed with teeth or corrugations 9. The chain, having been passed around the casing, is inserted in the groove between said jaws and is drawn as tightly around the casing as possible so as to permit one of said extended pivots to be inserted behind two shoulders 11 formed on the body on opposite sides of said groove and directed to- Specification of Letters latent.

motion. Upon the motion in one direction of the engine and lever, the chain is tightened around the casing and grips it so that it is turned with the lever. Upon the reciprocating motion of the engine in the opposite direction, the lever can be drawn back by hand, so that the chain is then loose around the casing, and can be drawn back to its first position, so that, upon another movement in the firstnamed direction of the engine, the chain is again tightened and the casing is again turned.
I claim A casing tongs comprising a body portion having an aperture therethrough and an extension having on its outer side a groove forming jaws the inner side being concave and provided with teeth, a lever extending through said aperture and pivoted to said body, a chain in said groove one end of which is attached to said lever, said chain consisting of links and pivots, the pivots extending outside the links, and the body being formed on each side of said groove with shoulders adapted to engage the extended ends of said pivots, said body being also formed with registering apertures, and a pin through said apertures, said apertures being so located that the pin passes outside the chain when in said groove.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM G. JACKSON.
