To all whom it may concern:

citizen of "the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trenches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvementsin wrenches, and has particular relation to wrenches 'of the chain type.

The object of the invention is primarily to provide a double acting wrench in which both of the jaws are similar and interchangeable and provided with additional sets of teeth whereby the life of the jaws is increased, and further comprehends a hen dle of a novel shape and method of attachmentto the jaws, therein embodying an improvement over the wrench disclosed in Patent Number S89,2i6 heretofore issued to M. E. Layne and myself by the United States PatentOifice.

With the above and other objects in view,

the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illusg trated in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, as applied to a pipe. The numeral 8 designates the jaw plates of my preferred form of wrench, one of which is fitted to each side of the enlarged end 2 of the handle and clamped in position by means of the transverse bolt 9 passing through said jitW plate and the enlarged end 1 2. Each of the plates is provided at its opposite side with two sets of teeth 10 so that after one side of the jaw plates is worn out they may be turned over and the unworn sets of teeth brought in to position for use. The recess 11 is provided intermediate of the sets of teeth 10 on each side of the jaw plates in order to permit the transfer of the pipe from one set of teeth to the other without releasing the chain and in order to provide the slack-in the chain for its-release when the pipe is placed insuch central recess 11.

The'inner side of each of the jaw plates is provided with two lengthwise shoulders 12 spaced apart and having their inner sides abrupt, and between these shoulders the en- I larged end 2 of the handle snugly fits, as shown in Fig. i, whereby the plates are held rigidly against turning relatively to the handle when the clamp bolt 9 is tightened. It will he noted that the jaw plates are symmetrical on opposite sides of the transverse center line aa and also on opposite sides of the longitudinal line bb, which construction provides for the interchangeability of the jaws from one side ofthe handle to the other and also provides for turning the jaws over, so that after the teeth on one side have been worn those on the other side may be brought in to position for use. The end of the grip chain 5 is permanently secured to the handle 1, as shown in Fig. 2. 'The sides of the handle near the end 2 are swedged out on each side, forming recesses in-which the respective members of a double link of the chain rest and a pin or rivet passes through ception of the method of securing the jaw plates against turning relative to the handle, the two forms of wrench herein shown and described are precisely similar.

In screwing and unscrewing pipe, it is often necessary to, at diilerent times, turn full lines in Fig. l, by a downward manipulation of the handle the pipe may be turned in one direction and when it is desired to turn it in the opposite directi-oi'l, it may be shifted to the position shown in dotted lines in 1, without disengaging the chain 5, and by an upward manipulation of the handle 1, the said pipe will be turned in the opposite direction The chain 5 must necessarilyhave a certainjamount of slack, which must be taken up before the chain will grip around and turn the pipe and consequently the handle 1 must have a certain range of movement in order to permit the slack to be taken up before the handle comes in contact with the chain. For thispurpose the handle near'its operating end has an arcuate, or curved section the concave or recessed side of which permits the required range of handle movement it, of course, being understood that any other manner of forming the handle relatively to the gripping plates may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The improvement may be briefly described as a straight handle, having a hooked head end portion, and a curved connecting portion aflording, on the working side a recess, and apair of double ended tapering trebly reversible interchangeable jaw plates having on one-face handle embracing ribs, and so secured to the head as to bring one edge of their tapering inner ends alongside the head portion ofthe bend of the recess, and a chain substantially in the longitudinal median plane of the handle, said chain anchored at one endto the head, and adjustably attached to the hooks by its outer portion, and, in use, playing partly within the space afforded by the recess.

What I claim is H 1. A pipe wrench comprising a handle provided intermediate of its ends with a curved portion forming a recess, a pair of elongated interchangeable jaw plates clamped to the opposite sides of the handle, and each provided on its opposite longitudinal sides with two sets of oppositely acting teeth arranged so that one set operatively engages the pipe when the handle is turned in one direction, and the other set operatively engages the pipe when the movement of the handle is reversed, together with a grip chain anchored to the end of the handle adjacent to the aw plate.

2. A pipe wrench comprising a handle provided intermediate of its ends with a curved portion forming a recess, a pair of elongated interchangeable jaw plates clamped to opposite sides ofthe handle, engaging. means carried by each jaw plate and e tending lengthwise thereof and engaging with said head and locking the jaw plates rigidly against turning relative to the handle, each jaw plate being provided on its opposite longitudinal sides with two sets of oppositely acting. teeth arranged so that one set operatively engages the pipe when the handle is turned in one direction and the other set operatively engages the pipe when themovement of the handle is reversed, together with a grip chain anchored to the end of the handle adjacent to the aw plates.

In a pipe wrench, a handle having at one end means for detachably engaging a grip chain, a pair of elongated interchangeable j aw plates clamped to the opposite sides of the handle, and each provided on its 011- posite longitudinal sides with two sets of oppositely acting teeth, arranged sothat one set operatively engages the pipe when the handle is turned in one direction, and the other set operatively engages the pipe when the movement of the handle is reversed, together with a grip chain anchored to the end of the handle adjacent to the jaw plates, a section of said handle adjacent to the jaw plates being raised out of alinement with said plates to permit said chain to pass between the pipe and said raised section.

A device of the character described including a handle having a hooked head end portion and a curved connecting portion, affording, on its working side, a recess, a pair of double-ended, tapering trebly' reversible interchangeable jaw-plates having on one face handle engaging means and so secured to the head as to bring one edge of their tapering inner ends alongside of the head portion of said recess, and a chain substantially in the longitudinal median'plane of the handle, said chain being anchored at one end to the head, adjustably attached to the hooks of said head by its outer end, and,

A pipe wrench comprising a handle, a pair of interchangeable jaw plates secured on opposite sides of the handle at one end thereof, a gripping chain pivotally attached at one end to said handle, and means for detachably fastening the free end of said chain to said handle, said handle being provided adjacent to its connection with said plates with an arcuate portion to permit greater movement of said handle. i
