DIGHT, OF GROVE CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Application filed May 23, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN MOON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grove City, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench adapted to grip and obtain a purchase upon pipes and similar structures.
An object of the present invention is to provide a wrench adapted to force the jaws thereof against the cylindrical surface with a large pressure to thereby more effectually grip the sides of the cylindrical pipe.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of my invention is illustrated, in which Figure l is a side view of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a side sectional view thereof, taken on the line AA of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of my improved wrench in which one of the jaws thereof has been broken away to more clearly illustrate the construction of the jaw therebehind.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 is the lever handle of the wrench which is adapted to be gripped and moved in the direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 during the using of the wrench. The lever handle 1 is provided with the cross bar 5 and the bifurcated head 2 extending therefrom. The bifurcated head is provided with the slotted apertures 3 therein and with the notches 4 at the outer periphery thereof. In order that the bifurcated head portion 2 may be suitably strengthened, a cross brace rod 6 is provided and is secured to the portion 2 as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 8.
Mounted rotatably with respect to the lever 1 and head 2 are the plates 7 provided Specification of Letters Patent.

at their front edges with the enlarged jaw portions 8 which portions preferably include an angle of 90 degrees therebetween. In some classes of work it has been found advisable to provide the said jaws with the gripping members 9 hereinafter termed bits and in the present instance there has been illustrated one of the said hits as being formed with wedge-shaped ends which engage suitable undercut portions in the surface of the jaws. The rear portions of the plates 7 are provided with the reinforcing strip 10- which conforms to the curvature of the said plate and the periphery 12 thereof is the arc of a circle, the center of which is located at 11. The plates 7 are provided with suitable apertures therein which are offset from the point 11 as more clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and through which apertures extends the smaller portion 13 of the pivot pin or bolt 14. The portion of the bolt 14 lying between the plates 7 is enlarged as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, by which a suitable shoulder is provided which serves to hold the plates 7 in spaced relation and furthermore provides a transverse brace therefor. A suitable retaining nut 15 is used to grip the outer portion of the plates 7. By the positioning of the pivot pin 14 oifset from the center of curvature 11 of the inner periphery 12 of the plates a cam-like action is obtained with respect to the cross bar 5 and the inner of the said plates. The cross bar 5 is adapted to con tact with and bear against the inner periphery of the plate and inasmuch as the said inner periphery is or lies upon a curve the center of which is at 11, as the cross bar 5 moves toward the ends of the arc the head portions 2 will be drawn inward and the bolt or pivot pin 14 will travel toward the inner end of the slotted apertures 3 in the head, the particular advantage of which will be hereinafter more fully described. In order to further strengthen and hold the plates 7 in spaced relation, a suitable bolt 16 is placed near the upper edge of the plates 7 and is provided with the retaining or spacing block 17 and a suitable nut 18 the spacing block 17 and nut 18 cooperating to engage each side of the said plates and to thereby hold the same in fixed relation. The bolt 16 further provides a securing means to which the chain 19 is secured. The chain 19 is of the usual construction such as is used in connection with wrenches of the character described, is adapted to embrace the cylindrical surface which the wrench is intended to grip and is provided with the cross pin 20 secured to the end thereof. The said pin is of a size to fit securely in and engage the side walls of the notches 41 of the head portions 2.
The wrench described is simple in construction and possesses strength and rigidity which is desirable in wrenches of this character.
In the practical use of my improved wrench the jaws 8 are positioned against the cylindrical surfaces which in most cases will be a pipe and chain 19 wrapped therearound and the cross pin 20 positioned in one of the notches 1, it being understood that a plurality of these notches are to be provided in order to adapt the wrench to pipes of varying sizes. lVith the pipe in contact with the aws 8 and the chain 19 wrapped therearound with the cross pin 20 installed within a suitable notch, by a turning of the handle as illustrated by the arrow in Fig. 2, the notches t will be turned about the pivot pin 1a as a center and the chain thereby tight ened about the wrench which will force the said jaws into frictional engagement with the surface of the pipe. By reason of the fact that thecross bar 5 and the inner peripheral surface 12 of the jaws are cam-like in action, the head portions 2 will be drawn inward and away from the jaws 8, by which action the notches 4 will also be drawn inward, which will tend to give the final tightening to the chain about the pipe and will be equivalent to a lever of great length, 3 which will tend to secure the aws 8 against the pipe surface with an enormous pressure 1 and will insure a successful gripping thereof 1 by means of the jaws.
tion and operation of my improved wrench,
