To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. Doxooirun, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain Piperenches, of which the following is a specification.

Hy invention relates to in'iprovements in Wrenches designed for use in gripping and turning pipes and similar articles, and more particularly to that class thereof known generally as pipe-wrenches.

The object of my invention isthe production of a device of the character mentioned which will be of improved construction and eflicient in operation.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

VVit-h these objects in View my invention consists in a chain pipe-wrench characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the upper end portion of the tool showing the same in gripping relation with a pipe. and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the gripping jaws detached.

The preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the drawings comprises an elongated handle 1 formed preferably of metal, the same being of any appropriate length and thickness. The outer end 2 of the handle 1 is reduced and squared. Arranged upon said end of the handle 1 is a plurality of angular gripping jaws, each being right angular in cross section and outwardly tapering as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. Four jaw members 3 are employed the vertices thereof being in registration with the corners of the handle end 2, said corners being longitudinally recessed as at 4 in order to snugly receive said vertices of said jaw members. Said jaw members are rigidly secured in this position by means of screws 5 which extend therethrough and which are threaded into adjacent portions of said handle. The arrangement. is such. as will be observed. that the sides 6 of adjacent jaw members 3 are parallclly disposed and equally spaced apart. the inner end portions or bases of said sides (3 being of such a width as to project considerably beyond the adjacent lateral surfaces of the handle 1 for a purpose which will be presently described. The outer edges of the sides 6 are toothed or serrated as at 7 so as to adapt the same to positively grip or engage any surface with which the same may be brought in contact. Provided at the bases of the sides 6 are inwardly projecting flanges 8 which serve in a capacity about to be described.

Arranged upon the handle 1 immediately below or rearward of the jaw members 3 is a ring or loop 9 which is in swiveled connection with said handle so that ready rotary movement about said handle is permitted; the arrangement being such, as will be observed. that outward movement of said ring upon said handle is prevented by the base edges of the jaw members 3 and inward or rearward movement thereof by an annular shoulder 9' formed by recessing said handle for the reception of said ring. Provided at one side of the ring 9 is an enlarged or oil'set portion 10 which serves to accommodate nuts 11 threaded or otherwise secured upon the inner end portion of the shank of an eye 12. said shank projecting through said portion 10 and being. with the construction described and shown in swiveled connection therewith. Pivotally secured to the eye 12 is a chain 13 of any convenient form but 'n-eferably of the flatlinked, single-course. double-acting type, the same being provided throughout its length with laterally projecting pintles 14. Said chain 13 is of such a width as to be adapted to be snugly received between adjacent edges of adjacent flanges S the projecting ends of the pintles 14, when said chain is arranged between adjacent flanges 8, being adapted to engage against the latter so as to prevent longitudinal movement thereof.

Operation of the device when in use is as follows :-The head of the handle 1 that is the outer serrated edges of corresponding sides 6 of adjacent gripping jaws 2 are arranged against the side of the pipe or other object 15 to be turned, the handle 1 being disposed in a plane at right angles to the axis of said pipe or object, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The chain 13 is then wrapped around said pipe or object the free end thereof being twisted in the recess between the parallel sides 6 at the opposite side of said handle so that the respective extremities of one of the pintles 14 may engage against the rearward or under sides of the flanges 8 of said side 6 said flanges 8, as will be observed, will thereby serve to maintain said chain in embracing relation so that when the handlel is rotated in a clock-wise direct-ion the teeth 7 of the head thereof resting against the pipe or object 15 will engage against the latter effecting rotation thereof. In order to increase the efiicacy of the tool in gripping the pipe or object engaged thereby, opposite sides of certain of the links of the chain 13 are provided with gripping teeth or serrations 16, the latter being so arranged as to be operative when the handle 1 is manipulated in the manner above set forth.

By reason of the swiveled connection of the extremity of the chain 13 with the securing ring 9, both sides of said chain are rendered available for employment. Also, by the provision of four similar aw members 3, a gripping head is provided having four sides available for engagement against and gripping of the side of the object to be rotated. The ring 9 being in swiveled connection with the handle 1, the frame may be readily rotated to any desired posit-ion relative to the jaw members 3 so that the chain 13 may be adjusted for cooperation with any pair of the parallelly extending projecting sides 6 of the jaw member 3; thereby providing a tool of extended longevity.

A tool of a construction as set forth is durable and economical, the same is of great efficiency in operation and is not susceptible to readily becoming inoperative.

Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form for carrying my invention into effect this may be varied somewhat without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not desire to be limited to the precise details of construction as set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A chain pipe-wrench comprising in combination, a handle; a head, said head consisting of a plurality of angular plates arranged radially about one end of said handle and having their vertices secured rigidly thereto, the outer edges of the sides of said plates being serrated for gripping, adjacent sides of adjacent plates being parallelly extending; a chain having one end in swiveled connection with said handle adjacent said head thereof, said chain being adapted to be wrapped around the pipe or object to be gripped, the free end of said chain being adapted to be arranged between adjacent of said projecting head portions; and spaced projections upon said chain adapted to engage against the ends of said projecting head portions to maintain said chain in gripping relation with the object about which it is arranged, substantially as described.

2. A chain pipewrench comprising in combination, a handle; a head, said head consisting of a plurality of angular plates arranged radially about one end of said handle and having their vertices secured rigidly thereto, the outer ends of said plates being serrated for gripping; adjacent sides of adjacent plates being parallelly extending; a chain having one end in swiveled connection with said handle adjacent said head thereof, said chain being adapted to be wrapped around the pipe or object to be gripped, the free end of said chain being adapted to be arranged between any two of said parallelly extending projecting head portions, inwardly projecting flanges upon the rearward edges of the pairs of said parallelly extending projecting head portions; spaced laterally projecting studs on said chain adapted to engage against said flanges to maintain said chain in gripping relation with the object embraced thereby; and teeth upon the opposite sides of said chain, substantially as described.
