Description

Oct. 28 1924.
Y H. H. EUVE RARD J AR. WRENCH Filed NOS". 6, 1922 fififizwemrd ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Oct. 28, 1924.
UNITD sr HOMER H. EUVERABD,
OFFICE.
OF BAR-BERTON, OHIO.
JAR WRENCH.
Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HoMnR H. EUVERARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barberton, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jar Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for tight ening and loosening fruit jar caps and the like, the general object of the invention be ing to provide a device for holding the jar and another device for engaging the cap so that the cap can be securely fastened on the jar or loosened from the jar.
A further object. of the invention is to provide each device with a flexible member for engaging the cap or jar so that there is no danger of damaging the parts by use of gripping jaws and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plurality of flexible members for the cap engaging device which are interchangeable and of varying sizes so that the device can be used on different sizes of caps and also to make the flexible member of the jar engaging device adjustable so that it can be used on different sizes of jars.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of a jar showing the devices in use.
Figure 2 is a view of the jar wrench.
Figure 8 is a side View thereof.
Figure 4 is a view of the opposite side thereof.
The drawing shows a cap engaging wrench A and a jar engaging wrench B. These wrenches are adapted to hold the jar and cap tightly so that when one device is turned in relation to the other the cap will be removed from the jar or tightened on the jar.
The device B comprises a pair of members 8 and 9, the members being provided with ears 10 which are pivoted together by the 6, 1922. Serial No. 599,363.
pins 11. The member 8 is of substantially Y-shape, one arm 11 thereof being of yoke shape and having one end of a flexible member 12 connected with its outer end, as shown at 13. The other arm 14 has a cross piece 15 thereon for engaging a part of the flexible member. The member 9 has a slotted cross piece 16 at its end which is adapted to work in the yoke 11 and the flexible member passes through the slot in this part 16. The slot is of wedge shape and a wedge 17 is secured to the end of the member 12 so that the diameter of the loop formed by said member can be changed by pulling more or less of the member through the slot and then holding it in adjusted position by placing the wedge 17 in the slot as shown.
This member 12 is of greater width than the flexible member of the device A and is adapted to engage the jar. This wrench will not only act to hold the jar against turning movement but it will also act as a carrying means for the jar so that the same need not be touched by the hands when the jar is hot. As will be seen the pull of the member 9 is in a direct line tangent to the circumference of the jar and therefore is very effective. The two arms of the member 8 form two bearing points which press the band against the jar and thus prevent rotary motion of the tool around the jar and when the handles are pressed together the diameter is decreased, causing the same to grip the jar with a brake band effect so that the jar will not turn when the cap is being removed therefrom or tightened thereon. By this arrangement of parts no metal whatever is permitted to touch the jars as the bearing points rest on the band.
As before stated the device is adjustable to parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A wrench of the class described comprising a pair of members pivotally connected together, one member being of Y-shape with one arm thereof of yoke shape and the other arm having a cross piece thereon, the second member having a slot therein a, band-like flexible member connected with the yokeshaped arm and passing through the slot in the other member and a Wedge on one end of the flexible member for engaging the slot for holding the flexible member in the slot, the arm carrying the cross piece acting as a second bearing point for the flexible member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
