WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1910.
Application filed. July 7, 1909. Serial No. 506,365.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRoN A. .Snoor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haddam, in the county of lVashington and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in W'renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a wrench of novel formation of the type comprising a relatively fixed jaw and a movable jaw, the latter being pivotally supported upon a handle and adapted to make interlocking connection with the shank of the fixed jaw so as to hold the two jaws in relative adjusted position according to the size of the article to be gripped and turned.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combinations of parts which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of the specification: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the handle portion of a wrench embodying the invention showing the fixed jaw and its shank and the movable jaw in full. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the wrench as seen with the jaws upon the obverse side. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a cross section on the line l l of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side view of the upper portion of the handle and jaw pivoted thereto.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The wrench comprises a shank 1 which is provided at one end with a fixed jaw 2. One edge of the shank is formed with a series of ratchet teeth 3. The handle comprises a main portion 1 and a cap 5. The main portion 4 is hollow and approximately of U- form in transverse section as indicated most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. The cap 5 consists of a strip adapted to close the open-side of the space formed between the side members of the body portion 4. The cap 5 may be secured to the side pieces by rivets in any convenient and substantial way. The cap 5 is bent at its outer end so as to close the handle at its outer end. The space formed within the hollow handle is such as to snugly receive the shank 1. The movable jaw 6 is mounted upon the pin 7 connecting the extensions at the inner end of the handle and its sides are recessed to receive side portions of the handle member 1, to admit of the same coming flush with the sides of the jaw. The movable jaw 6 has an extension 8 which is provided upon its inner side with a series of teeth 9 to mesh with the ratchet teeth 3 of the shank 1 and hold the movable jaw in the required adjusted position. A spring 10 is secured at one end to the inner end of the cap 5 and overlaps the extension 8 of the movable jaw and normally exerts an inward pressure upon said extension to hold the teeth 9 thereof in engagement with the teeth 3.
In the operation of the wrench, the outer end of the movable jaw 6 is pressed upon to disengage the teeth 9 from the teeth 3 thereby admitting of the jaws 2 and 6 being separated so that the wrench may be readily applied to the work. The jaws 2 and 6 may be closed upon the work by moving the handle portion upon the shank 1, the teeth 9 riding upon the teeth 3. It will be observed that the shank and handle portions mutually strengthen and brace each other and with a spreading apart of the jaws 2 and 6 results materially in lengthening the handle or leverage of the wrench. The handle portion of the wrench may be provided in any manner and is preferably formed from a strip of sheet metal bent upon itself intermediate of its longitudinal edges, the space between the side members being closed by the cap 5 in the manner herein stated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the.
invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described the invcntion, what is claimed is-- A wrench comprising a shank having a jaw at one end and a series of ratchet teeth along its inner edge, a hollow handle slidably mounted upon the shank and compriscooperate with the ratchet teeth of the shank end of said cap and having its other end portion engaging with the extension of the pivoted jaw to normally hold the teeth J5 thereof in engagement with the teeth of ing a body of approximately U-form in .cross section, and a cap closing the space formed between the side members of said body portion, a jaw pivoted between the side members of the body portion'of the handle and the shank.
having its opposite sides recessed to admit I In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature of side menibers of the handle cominglflush in presence of two witnesses.
