PATENT Fnrcn.
HENRY BEIJISLE, OF SOMERSET, VISCONSIN.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettere Patent 110.627,894, dated June 27, 1899. Application filed April 25, 1899. Serial No. 714,385. (No model.)
.T0 all whom t mttyconce'n:
Be it known that I, HENRY BELrsLE, a .citizen of the United States, residing at Somerset, in the county of St. Croix` and Stateof Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to wrenches for turning pipes, rods, and the like, and which comprise in their organization a relatively-fixed jaw and a sliding head carrying a pivoted jaw, the two jaws being constructed to obtain an intermittent grip upon the article to be turned by oscillating the handle or stock in the ordinary and well-known manner.
The improvement will be described at length hereinafter; and it consists, primarily, of the novel features, details of construction, and combinations of parts set forth at length in the subjoined description, illustrated in the annexed drawings, and particularly claimed.
For a full disclosure of the 'invention reference is to be had to the accompanying description and drawings, in which- Figure lis a Side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with and embodying the essential features of the'invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, partly in section, the dotted lines showing the operation of the pivoted jaw and the thumb-latch. Fig. 3 is a detail View in perspective of the sliding head disassociated from/the stock and pivoted jaw.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The stock or handle-bar l is provided at its front end with a curved jaw 2, preferably integral therewith and toothed on its convex side, the teeth extending outward and downward or away from the stock or bar. A series of ratchet-teeth 3 are formed in the top side of the stock or handle-bar and coperate with the thumb-latch 4 to hold the sliding head 5 in an adjusted position. The stock or handle-bar may be ofl any length and formation, and, as shown, is straight and of rectangular outline in cross-section. Obviously a handle of any pattern .may be applied to the gripping end of the bar or stock, if desired, such construction being well understood and common in the art. The sliding head 5 is a frame of approximately rectangular construction and embraces the four sides ofthe stock or handie-bar and is movable longitudinally thereon. yA slot 6 is provided in the topmost bar of the head 5 and receives the toothed end of the thumb-latch l, which is pivoted to oper ate in said slot, the teeth projecting beyond the lower side of the topmost bar, so as to ine terlock with the ratchet-teeth 3 and secure the head in an adjusted position. A projection 7 extends forwardly from the upper portion of the sliding head and is cleft or bifurcated at its outer end to receive the reduced end of the jaw 8, which is pivoted thereto. The upper forward corner of the projection 7 is made rounding to admit of the pivotedV jaw 8 turning when adapting itself to the l pipe or rod when operating the wrench to secure a new grip thereon preparatory to again moving the wrench forward to turn the article to which the tool is fitted. The shoulders 9, provided at the sides of the reduced end of the jaw 8, conform to the forward extremities of the projection 7 and abut thereagainst, so as to limit the movement of the pivoted jaw under the influence of its actuatingspring 10. j
The pivoted jaw 8 is curved and overlaps the fixed jaw 2 and is toothed upon its inner side, the teeth facing in an opposite direction to the teeth of the jaw 2, so as to act in opposition thereto and insure the pipe or. rod being iirml y gripped between the two jaws when the tool is in service. The actuating-spring is secured at its rear end to the topniost bar of the sliding head 5, and its forward end is curled and adapted to exert a downward pressure upon the pivoted jaw in advance of the projection 7, so as to hold said jaw in proper relation and insure it engaging positively with the article to be gripped.
The thumb-latch 4e is curved and its rear end is expanded, forming arest for the thumb or linger to obtain a purchase upon when it is required to disengage the toothed end of the latch from the stock or handle-bar. A
spring l1 is secured at its forward'end to the rear portion of the head 5, and its rear end IOO normally exerts an upward pressure against the rear end ot' the thumb-latch, so as to hold its toothed end in engagement With the ratchet-teeth of the stock. The thumb-latch, being located upon the top side ofA the sliding head, is out of the Way and does not interfere with the free operation of the tool when used in a small space, which would be the case if located upon the bottom side. Moreover, it is readibly accessible at all times and is in position to be pressed upon to release the head to effect a quick adjustment of the pivoted jaw when fitting the wrench to a pipe or like article to be forcibly turned.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a Wrench of the character described, a stock or handle-bar havinga curved terminal forming a jaw toothed on its convex side and having a series of ratchet-teeth upon its top side, a head slidable upon the stock and having an upper forward projection bifurcated in its outer end and having its topmost bar slotted, a thumb-latch having its toothed end pivoted within the slot of said head and adapted to cooperate with the ratchet-teeth of the stock, and a curved jaw having its rear end reduced and pivoted between the bifurcations of the said forward projection and adapted to cooperate with the fixed jaw, as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described wrench, compris ing a stock having its forward end curved and toothed upon its convex side, a head slidably mounted upon the stock and having its topmost bar slotted and provided with a forward projection cleft or bifurcated in its outer end and having its uppercorner rounded, a curved jaw toothed upon its inner side and having its rear end reduced and pivoted between the bifurcations of the said forward projection and having shoulders at the base of the reduced end to conform to the extremities of the said bifurcations and abutting thereagainst to limit the inward movement of said jaw, a spring secured at its rear end to the head and constructed to exert a pressure upon the pivoted jaw in advance of its reduced end,-a thumb-latch pivoted within the slot of said head and adapted to cooper ate with the ratchet-teeth formed in the top side of the stock, anda spring applied to the upper rear portion of the sliding head and exerting an outward pres-sure against the rear end of the thumb-latch, as and for the purpose set forth.
In' testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
