IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,830, dated Decembei 23, 1873; application filed September 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AlVIES H. BAKER, ASA DONEY, and FREDERICK N. OWEN, of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and we do hereby declare that the .followin g isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a tool or instrument combining in one a nail-extractor, a hammer, pliers, and a tack or nail claw, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a front view, of our combined tool or instrument.
A and E represent the two handles, provided with circular enlargements, as shown, and pivoted, through the center of the same, to each other by a bolt, a. The handle A, on one side of the pivot, is provided with a hammer-head, O, and on the other side with a jaw, B, a corresponding jaw being formed on the handle E. This latter handle extends for some distance beyond the pivot, and forms the curved lever D. On the end of the handle A is formed the claw F. G isa spring between the handles A E to keep the jaws B B open and ready for work.
To use this tool as a nail-extractor, where the head of the nail is below the surface, the jaws B B are placed over the head of the nail, and the head G struck with a hammer. The handles A E are then grasped, and the handle A raised up, which brings the lever D in contact with the surface of the work, so as to act as a fulcrum and bring the jaws together on the nail. The more the handleA is raised the more firmly the jaws grasp the nail and pull it out.
To use it as a hammer, the handles A E are grasped, and the head 0 forms the hammer.
The jaws B B may be used as pliers, and the claw F for drawing tacks or nails where the head is above the surface, or for opening boxes, barrels, &c. v
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desir-e to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the withiir described tool or instrument, consisting of the handles A E, jaws B B, head 0, lever D, claw F, and spring G, all of said parts being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. BAKER. ASA DONEY. FREDERICK N. OWEN.
