COMBINATION TUOL. No. 356,925. Patented Feb. 1, 1887 WITNESSES J INVENTOR wom ii 86 Y JMwh/W ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT rricn.
THOMAS ll. 'OHAMBERLIN, OF ARKANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 356,925, dated February 1, 1887.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. CHAMBER- LIN, of Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to hand-tools for do- Inestio and general use, in which several instruments are combined in one, such as a wrench formed by different-sized openings in the handle of the tool, a screw-driver blade at the rear end of the handle, a tack-puller, stovelid lifter, taclchaminer, and other devices at or near the forward end of the handle, and other tools, including a cork-screw and knifehlade at other parts; and the invention consists in a novel construction of such a tool and special combination of its different parts or devices, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents an exterior longitudinal view of a combination-tool embodying my invention; and Fig. 2, a further longitudinal view of the same in a plane at right angles to Fig. 1, with the forward portion of the tool in partial section. I
A is the handle of the tool, provided with a number of diiierent-sized angular openings, b, whereby said handle is made to constitute a wrench, and which has a projection, c, at its rear end, constituting a screw-driver blade or nib. Upon the one marginal portion of said handle, near its rear end, is an opening and closing or pivoted knife-blade, B, which may be used for cutting kindling-wood and other purposes. By its position, and being made to close when not in use, it is out of the way when not required, and when opened is capable of being used at a very effective leverage.
The shank portion 0 of the tool is slightly bowed or curved, as shown in Fig. 2, and has i a cavity, (Z, made in and along its concave side, within which is pivoted a cork-screw, D, that when not in use shutsinto said recess or cavity, and thereby presents no objectionable protrusion, but which may readily be opened or swung outward for use, as represented in Fig. 2.
Across the forward portion of the shank in plane at right angles to the face of the handle is a solid arm-piece, E, cast in one piece with the shank and handle, and constructed at its one end to form ahammer-head, e, for driving tacks, and at its opposite end a crooked potlifter, f, and a curved can-opening blade, 9.
The extreme forward end portion, h, of the shank, is curved in a reverse direction to the main body of the latter, and is of flattened contour, terminating in a knife-edge in a transverse direction to its curvature, with a notch, '21, in said edge, thereby adapting the tool .to form both a stovecover lifter and a taclc puller.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
As anew article of manufacture, the within described combination-tool, consisting of a handle, A, having differentsized openings 1), adapting it to form a wrench, a screw-driver blade or nib, c, at the rear end of said handle, a pivoted knife-blade, B, in the rear portion of the one marginal side of the handle, a hollow curved shank, C, a pivoted cork-screw,D, adapted to close within said shank, a crossarm, E, constructed to form a hammerhead, e, at its one end, and a pot-lifter, f, and can-opening blade, at its opposite end, and a curved forward extension, h, of the shank, having a form both a stove-cover lift-er and a tack-puller, the whole being combined and arranged as herein set forth.
THOMAS CHAMBERLIN.
