COMBINATION-HAMMER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,653, dated June 28, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN STRASZER, of Manchester, in the county ot' St. Louis 'and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Combination-Hammer, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to combine a number of appliances in a single instrument, and thusavoid the necessity ot' having a number of small tools.

Theinvention consists in constructing a combination-hammer of two pivoted handles, having cross-bars upon their pivoted ends, forming a hammer-head, a pliers, a nippers, and a saw-set, a punch attached to the perforated handles, a tack-claw formed upon the end of one handle, a screw-driver formed upon the end of the other handle, and adjustable jaws secured by set-screws to the squared end part of one of the handles, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A is a hammer-head, which is attached to a handle, B, and is extended beyond the said handle to form one jaw, U, ot' a pliers. D is the other jaw of the pliers, which is attached to a handle, E, is halved to the head A O, and is connected to the said head A C by a pivot, F. The jaw D is extended beyond the handle E, and is inclined upon its inner side to form the movable jaw G of a saw-set. The jaw G, when closed, shuts into an inclined recess in the hammer-head A, which forms the station-v ary jaw or anvil H of the saw-set.

In the hammer-head A, a little beyond the recess or jaw H, is placed a set-screw, I, to serve as a stop or gage for the saw-set, and which can be turned in or out to give less or more set to the saw-teeth, as desired.

Upon the outer sides of the head A C and the jaws D Gr respectively are formed curved jaws J K, to serve as nippers for cutting wire, drawing nails, and` other uses. With this construction the three pairs of jaws O D, G H, and J K are drawn together by pressing the handles B E toward each other, so that they will all be closed when the tool is used as a hammer, and will thus relieve the pivot F from the strain.

L is a punch, the shank of which has a screwthread cut upon it, which screws into a screwhole in the handle E, so that the said punch L can be set forward as it wears. The punch L shuts into a hole,M, in the other handle,B, to do its work when the handles E B are pressed together. The end N ot' the handle E is curved inward, and has a tapered notch formed in it to adaptitto serve asaclawfordrawingtaeks. The end O ofthe handleB is flattened and tapered to adapt it to serve as a screw-driver. The end part ofthe handle B is squared to lit into holes in the bases ot' the jaws l? Q, which jaws are held in place by set-screws R, so that the said jaws can be adjusted at any desired distance apart or detached or turned to the other side of the said handle.

The surface of the squared part ofthe handle B is grooved or roughened to give the setscrews R a irm hold upon it, so that the said jaws P Q will be held from slipping when 11nder a strain.

In the adjacent surfaces ot' the jaws O D, near their ends, are formed cross-grooves S, to receive the side edges of the head of a nail or tack, as shown in Fig.' 2, so that the tool can be used for starting a nail or tack in places where the said nail or tack cannot be held with the left hand when being started. After the nail or tack has been started the jaws C D are withdrawn from the nail-head, and the said nail or tack is driven home with the hammerhead A.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. As an improved article of manufacture, a combination-hammer constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the handles B E, the hammer-head A, the pliers C D, the nippers J K, and the sawset G H I, asset forth.
