T. E. TATEUM.
COMBINATION TOOL FOR BOOT OR SHOE MAKERS USE. N0. 329,503... Patented Nov. 3, 1885.
ll j,
WITNESSES INVENIO'OR i aifik y w fi ATTO R N EY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. TATEUM, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO DWIGHT C. SUMNER, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINATION-TOOL FOR BOOT OR SHOE MAKERS USE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,503, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed July 16, l8F5. S. rial No. 171,751. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. TATEUM, a resident of the city and county of \Vorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combination-Tool for Boot and Shoe Manufacturers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the combination, in one convenient working-tool, of the several different ones as heretofore used by boot and shoe manufacturers, wherewith the several operations, as pulling and drawing the leather over the edge of the last, cutting or slitting to avoid wrinkles or plaits, punching the hole for a peg or nail and driving the same, 850., can all be done without laying down one to take up another, and embraces in its construction all the tools most frequently used, so arranged as to be used with facility and ease, saving both time and labor in doing the work.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a combination-tool embodying my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is an edge view. Fig. 2 is a side view at right angles to Fig. 1, a part of onejaw and handle being shown in broken lines as open. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section on the plane of the center of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 shows a part of the butt or hammer end from the opposite side from Fig. 1.
The same letters indicate the same parts in all.
A B are the two handles of apair oflastingpinchers, with a pivot at O, the fulcrum-head B, and their jaws a a, corrugated in the usual form. The butts of the handles are made thick, and finished flat, or nearly so, on the end, one extending across to meet the other, and the latter having a lip, h, as shown, to bear on the former, so that the weightof both is effective in driving a peg with the end, the short oneAhaving also a claw or nail-extractor, 0, formed in it, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. At the other end of the tool the head A is made with two sockets, one for the awl Eto be held by the screw 9, and one for the knife D, held in place by thescrewf through itsshank, its edgef being sharpened as aknife. These features make a convenient workingtool, being the ones most frequently used, though either or all the others shown may be added to the same tool, as the cutting-punch 6, with its plate 6', the pipe-wrench k, and the square wrench d, (the last two being efl'ective on articles of various sizes,) and all be comprised in a handy-sized combinationtool, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the combi nation boot and shoe tool described, consisting of the lasting-pinchers, the awl, the knife, the hammer-faced butt, the punch, and wrenches, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purposes as above set forth and described.
