RALPH UTO, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LEATHER-CHANNELING TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 30, 1911.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.
Serial No. 617,993.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH U'ro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Channeling Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in leather channeling tools.
One object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character having arranged thereon a spring gage adapted to be engaged with the edge of the leather whereby the channeling blade will be guided and caused to cut a channel at the desired distance from the edge of the leather by sim ply pressing inwardly on the tool to a greater or less extent.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool. Fig. 9. is a side view of the opposite side to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
My improved channeling tool comprises a stem or shank 1 having on its out-er end a U- shaped channel forming blade 2 one end of which is tapered and sharpened to a keen edge 3. The outer or looped portion of the blade is preferably formed at a slight angle as shown. Onthe inner end of the shank 1 is arranged a handle 4.
Riveted or otherwise secured to the shank 1 on the opposite side thereof from the blade 2 is a spring metal gage 5. The outer portion of the gage is oifset a suitable distance from the shank as shown. The lower end of the gage is extended on the edge adjacent to the cutting edge of the blade and forms a guide lug 6. The edge of the gage and the front edge of said guide lug 6 are curved outwardly to a slight extent as shown at 7 thus preventing said edges from cutting or catching into the leather.
By constructing the gage 5 of spring metal and arranging the same as herein shown and described it will be readily seen that a groove or channel may be readily cut at the desired distance from the edge of a shoe sole or other piece of leather by engaging the lower end of the gage with said edge of the sole or piece of leather and pressing inwardly to the desired extent thereby springing the gage outwardly and bringing the cutting blade inwardly to the position for forming the groove or channel.
'From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring amore extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A channeling tool comprising a shank, a U-shaped channeling blade formed on the outer end thereof, a handle secured to the inner end'of the shank, and a spring gage secured to one side of said shank to coact with said blade.
2. A channeling tool comprising a shank, a U-shaped channeling blade formed on the outer end thereof, a handle secured to the inner end of the shank, a spring gage secured to and oifset from one side of said shank and adapted to coact with said blade, and a guide lug formed on one edge of said gage, said lug and outer end of the gage having their edges turned outwardly as shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
