Description

oooooooo OOOOOOOOOOOOOO L. No. 488,728. Patented-Dec. 27 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK WARREN DANIELSON, OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
. SHOEMAKERS TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,728, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed June 22, 1892. Serial No. 437.601. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK WARREN DAN- IELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Shoemakers Tool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shoe-makers tools and consists essentially of a double knife adapted to be used for ornament-ing or otherwise cutting the soles of boots and shoes, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The object of this invention is to provide a knife of the character set forth of duplex construction and of an adjustable nature, wherein the parts are of simple form, efficient in their operation, strong and durable, and combining in one device a form of knife having a double use and carried by a single handle. f
In the drawingsz-Figure l is a perspective View of the improved knife. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 00. 00., Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the knife detached.
Similar numerals are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1, designates the handle which is of suitable size in cross-sectional diameter and of a preferred length and material, and in the front end thereof is formed a slot 2, and a-beveled end 3, the said slot being adapted to receive a tang 4, of a support or holder 5. The under side of the said support or holder 5, has a lug 6, depending therefrom which is longer than it is broad and adapted to be embraced by a gage 7, having a slot 8, therein and adapted to be adjusted to and from the outer end of the support or holder and held in fixed position by a screw 9, bearing on a washer 10, which engages the under surface of the said gage. The screw 9, extends through the lug 6, upward into the material of the support or holder and the front end of the gage is formed with arounded head 11, adapted to be pressed against and follow the outline of the edge of the material with which the device is used. The front portion of the support or holder 5, is reduced and constructed with a vertical slot or opening 12, and also with a lug 13,
about centrally situated on the extreme outer end and into which adjustably extends a screw 14, which is adapted to be employed as a set screw and the opening through which the same passes communicates with the vertical slot or opening 12. In the said slot or opening 12, is adapted to be adjustably and removably mounted a duplex knife consisting of a shank 15, having a reduced or beveled scorer or cutter 16, on the lower end thereof adapted to project below the under edge of the support or holder relatively to the head 9, of the gage 7, and the upper' end of said sha'nk 15, has an extended knife 17, thereon, with a convex cutting edge and formed with a heel and toe. The cutting edge of the knife or scorer l6, stands at a right angle to the cutting edge of the knife 17, whereby the said knife entire is adapted for a double use and said duplex construction is combined in one and the same device and may be alternately operated by reversing the position of the handle 1, the latter being held horizontally when in operation. The screw 14, is is adapted to engage the shank 15, of the duplex knife and hold the latter in adjusted position as will be readily understood. The under edge of the support or holder is beveled as at 18, in order to assist in the movement of the device over the material being operated upon and the front part of the said under edge beyond the projecting end of the knife 16, is beveled at a still greater angle as at 19, so as to remove the material from this point and avoid interference of the proper operation of the said knife 16.
The knife is intended for use in cutting any design on the soles of boots and shoes or to cut and ornament the shanks and foreparts of boots or shoes. The knife is used by holding the same horizontally in the hand with the support or holder between the thumb and forefinger. In using the knife edge 16, the
gage 7, is adjusted to the width desired to or from the said knife edge, in order to obtain the proper distance the cut is to be made from the edge of the sole of the boot or shoe, and by holding the gage against the edge of the sole and drawing the knife edge 16, over the same the out will be made at an equal distance throughout its length as will be readily understood. When desired the knife 17, may be turned and used in any manner desired.
The device might readily be used for many purposes other than those set forth and the advantages of the device will appear from time to time to those using the same.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new is:
1. The herein described device of the character set forth, consisting of a handle to be held horizontally and reversed and having a vertical slot extending through the end thereof, a knife'adj ustably and reversibly mounted in said Vertical slot having one end thereof of elongated sharpened form adapted to be disposed longitudinally in a plane parallel with the handle and the opposite end reduced and sharpened in a plane at right angles to 20 the elongated end, a gage adj ustably secured to the under side of the front part of the handle, and a set-screw extending inward from the end of said handle and engaging the shank of said knife, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character set forth the combination of a handle having a support or holder with a vertical slot in the front end thereof and a'set screw adapted to extend inward to said slot and also provided with a depending lug, a duplex knife, adjustably and reniovably fitted in said slot, and a gage adjustably mounted on said depending lug, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed .my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK WVARREN DANIELSON.
