Description

(NO Model.)
J. M. PALMER.
l .POCKET KNIFE.
No. 253,887. y Patented Peb. 21,1882.
FISQ. l r
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES VM.- PALMER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,887, dated February 21, 1882.
Application led October 25, 1880. (No model.)
To all .whom it may concern B e it known that I, JAMES M. PALMER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pocket Knives or Knife-Blades, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing my improved .knife-blade mounted in a handle 5 and Fig. 2, a view showing the ordinary transverse tile-teeth which I sometimes use on the side of the blade opposite the longitudinal file-teeth.
Like letters of reference indicate correspond` ing parts in the different iigures of the drawings.
My invention relates to knives which are especially designed for cleaning and trimming finger-nails; and it consists in a linger-nail blade having file-teeth arranged in parallel lines extending in the direction of the length of the blade, whereby the 'act of filing the iinger-nails can be performed with greater facility than with the ordinary tile-blades wherein the iile-teeth are arranged laterally across the same. 1 v
Files of this description are employed principally in paring or trimming the nails, and when formed as shown'in Fig. 2 it is difficult to use them with ease and convenience, as the blade of the knife has to be held in a horizgontal position, vlpressed firmly against the extremity of the nail, and moved back and forth in contact therewith, the nger being left unsupported during the operation.
In the use of my improvement, or of a knifeblade provided with a longitudinal le, the knife-handle is held in a vertical or nearly upright position, the le on the blade being pressed against the extremity of the nail and moved with a reciprocating motion back and forth, while the finger being operatedon is sup ported or steadied by the thumb of the operating-hand, or hand in which the knife is held, thus greatly facilitating the process.
I sometimes construct the blade with the longitudinal file C on one of its sides, and the lateral file D on its opposite side, thus securing all the advantages pertaining to each form of construction in one implement.
In Fig. l the blade B is represented as being jointed in the usual manner to the handle A; but it will be obvious that the blade may be rigidly attached to the handle by a tang or otherwise without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- Iu a finger-nail knife-blade, the combination of a-shank, a cutting-blade end, and the longitudinallyarranged ille ribs or teeth on the surface of the intermediate portion, substantially as described.
JAMES M. PALMER.
