IMPRovEMEn-r mrockET-KNIVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.1 87,483,7dated February 20,1877, application vfiled Y Decembereo,1876.' W l To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. RIGHTOR, of Helena, in the county of Phillips and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives; .and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to .the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in pocket-cutlery, and is designed to unite in a single knife-case, together with the usual cutting-blades, a detachable whetstone for sharpening the latter, and also a saw-blade, having a right-angular side rasping-surface.

It is frequently desirable for the cuttingblades of a knife to be sharpened by honing or rubbing on a whetstone, when, or in certain places where, an independent and usual article of whetstone cannot be conveniently used; and my object is to provide a means whereby a stone suitable for all practical purposes in sharpening a pocket-knife may be constantly' carried about with the knife, and that, too, i@ such a way as not to enlarge or render th 1 knife additionally bulky.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a View of a knife embodying my improvements, with the blades exposed. Fig. 2 represents the same with the whetstone detached. Fig. 3 is a View showing lthe saw-blade with its file-surfaces.

A represents the handle of the knife, made in the usual form, andfaccording to any approved style, but having one of its side pieces A provided with end `jaws or recesses B B', to support the independent whetstone G,

laterally outward along the length of the handie, and affording a back support for the stone. This latter may be of any suitable stone appropriate to sharpen the fine edge of a knife, and is, preferably, made with tapering or sectionally-dressed ends cc, which form tongues to engage with the end locking-recesses B B.

The drawing represents one large and two small cutting-blades, butit is evident that the number and relative size of these do not aifect my invention, and are only shown as an example of one ot' the different forms of construction with which my improvement may be com bined, but the saw-blade D is a material element in my invention, and is preferably made, as shown, large, and pivoted to the same fulcrum with the large cutting-blade of the knife. I preferably make this saw-blade of steel, since both the saw-edge, together with the rasp or filing surfaces, as are afterterward described, are best made of this ma terial, though, if desired, I may substitute any other metal. It has a Working-edge of serrated teeth d, While its interior face is constructed with the raspingsurface d', sothat it may act also as a le, when desired. The back edge of the blade, or that edge opposite to the toothed edge, is formed with a flange, E, extending at right angles out laterally from the handle of the knife, and constituting the fourth and adjustable side to the entire recess F thus formed in the side piece A. Both this side filing-surface d of the saw-blade, and, also, the exterior edge of this rear flange E, are rougheued, so as to present a raspingsurface at right angles to the length of the blade, and in this manner both a wide and a narrow le are obtained, each having a rightangular working-face.

Within the seat F, made as above described, the whetstone finds secure position, since it is bound on back and either end by fixed pieces, as described, and when the saw-blade is closed the stone is locked against displacement in any line of direction, the back flange E of the saw-blade, as the latter is closed, forming the front-edge support in this recess F, and the flange overlaps slightly the metallic end pieces, which latter have the flanges forming the end recesses B B. It is thus'apparent that the handle of the knife easily carries in one of its side pieces the independent whetstone, instead of the bone, ivory, or other piece usually secured lxedlytherein, and that this stone can be quickly used by turning back the saw-blade, with its rear flange, and thus allowing the stone to be slid out from its supporting-seat, and used as independent of the handle.

Preferably, lmakethe remaining side pieces of the handle as is the usual manner, the same being a xed bone piece rigidly secured in the handle, though it is obvious that I may make both sides of the handle with the detachable stones, and not have any fixed bone or other piece secured to, and forming a part of, the knife-handle.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. A knife Whose handle is constructed with a removable Whetstone forming part of the same, substantially as Aand for the purpose described.

2. A knife provided with a saw-blade having one or more right-angular rasping-surfaces, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The pocket-knife constructed With one or more cutting-blades, a saw-blade, D, having rasping or filing surfaces, and a detachable whetstone, C, the latter seated in the metallic side piece of the handle, and substituted` Witnesses:
