UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. JOHNSON, OF ROSE HILL, NEW YORK.
TOOL-SHARPENING IMPLEMENT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen H. J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rose Hill, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Sharpening Implements, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for sharpening tools, such as scissors, knife blades, needles and the like.
My invention resides more particularly in an integral piece of material, preferably madeof carborundum or a similar substance and adapted for sharpenin shears and various other tools.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device, a pair of shears being shown in sharp ening position in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a body 10, preferably made of carborundum or the like and having a longitudinally extending V-shaped slot 11 formed in the rear end thereof, a series of peripherally extending grooves 12 being provided on the body at a medial portion thereof. The body 10 at one end thereof terminates in a peripherally extending beveled portion 13 and formed integrally on the body and oflset from the horizontal axis thereof is a beveled head 14;, the said head being arranged to provide a fiat surface 15 on the upper side of the body 10 and a fiat surface on the lower side of the head 14:, the bevel of the portion 13 and the bevel of the head 14 being adapted to converge, between the top and bottom of the body 10.
When it is desired to sharpen a pair of shears or the like, the mentioned shears are engaged with the body 10 and the head 14: so that the fiat sides of the shears will abut against the flat surfaces 15, 16 while the beveled portions of the shear blades will abut against the beveled portion 13 and the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 24, 1911.
Patented June 25, 1912.
Serial No. 656,394.
bevel of the head 14. The handles of the shears are now grasped and operated to actuate the shear blades in a cutting manner similar to the operation of the blades in cutting cloth or the like, and the mentioned. movement of the shear blades against the beveled surfaces of the body 10 and head 14: will result in the sharpening of the blades, as will be readily understood.
When it is desired to sharpen sewing needles and the like, the needles are disposed in the grooves 12 and by'holding the needles rigidly in one hand and the body 10 in the other and moving the body 10 back and forth to frictionally engage the same with the needles, the points of the needles will readily become sharpened.
In a similar manner a knife blade can be inserted in the V-shaped slot 11 and by moving the body 10 back and forth on the knife blade, the mentioned blade will become sharpened, it being understood that the material from which the body 10 is made is of superior hardness to the usual steel employed in the manufacture of knife blades, needles, shears and other tools.
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a body provided with peripherally eX- tending grooves and having a V-shaped slot form-ed in one end thereof, the other end of the said body terminating in a beveled portion and a beveled head integrally formed on the said other end of the body, the said head bein offset from the longitudinal axis of the body to present a portion of the flat end of the body and a port-ion of the flat end of the head.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body provided with a beveled portion at one end thereof and a head integrally formed on the body to present a flattened surface of the said body and a flattened surface of the said head.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. JOHNSON.
