UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. MCKINLEY, OF CARNEGIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAlRl-CLIPPER.
SPEIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,601, dated .Tune 3, 1902.
Application filed October 12| 1901. Serial No. 78,460. (No model.)-
To all whom it may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, ROBEETE. MCKINLEY, a citizen of the United States of America,'re siding at Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair- Clippers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clippers, and is particularly adapted for surgeons use, the object being to provide a cheap, simple, and'effective device of this nature.
Briefly described, the invention comprises two handles pivotally` secured together, both being broadened into blades at their ends, which are provided with clipping-teeth, the blades being so mounted on the pivot as to permit the detachment therefrom for sharpening of the teeth or other purposes.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in whichp Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of my improved clippers. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, showing the two members moved around at right angles to each other into a position where they may be disengaged. Figs. 3 and 4 show different forms of pivoting means. Fig. 5 is a detail'perspective view of the form of pivot shown in connection with Figs. l
To put my invention into practice,I provide two plates or blades l and 2, Ythebody portion of which is somewhat rectangular in shape and the shanks 3.of which terminate in the handle et. These blades or plates 1 and 2 are beveled or inclined on their engaging faces, as more clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and are each provided with teeth 5 at their outer ends, the teeth of the'upper blade working' upon the teeth of the lower blade. The blade or plate l is provided with an oblong slot 6 to receive the T-he'ad 7 of the rivet 8, which fastens the two blades or plates together, this rivetbeing secured in the plate2 and the head lying across the slots 6, as shown in Fig.
l of the drawings. In case it is desired to de tach the blades or plates from each other, so as to sharpen the teeth or for other purposes, the
Ablade l is turned at right angles to the plate 2, as `shown in Fig.V 2, so that the T-head 7 will be brought into alinement with the slot 6. The blade 1` may then be readily removed from the blade 2. In Figs. 3 and 4, while the construction of the plates or blades are the same, I have shown a modified form of pivoting the two, plates together, the form shown in Fig. 3 consisting of the rivet 9 and the formin Fig. iconsisting of a small bolt,which is held by the nutll. The underneath face of the plate 2 is at a bevel, so as to lie flush upon the flesh and permit the teeth 5 to clip the hair close to the iesh. The peculiar construction of these blades or plates permits the use of such device in instances where the ordinary form of clippers could not be used and enables the clipping of the hair as close;
to the flesh as may be done with the ordinary clippers.
While the construction herein described is the practical form of my invention, yet in the practice of the same it will be observed that various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isal. In a device of the character described, a pair of integral substantially rectangular blades having their rear ends extended to form handles, said blades having their inner surfaces contacting throughout and carrying a series'ofintegral clipping-teeth on their forward ends,said blades being pivotally secured near their forward ends, the outer faces of the ends tapering to the cutting-teeth, substantially as described.
2. In hair-clippers, a pair of substantially rectangular integral'blades the rear ends of which are extended to'form integral handles and which have a series of. cuttingteeth IOO to said head of the rivet whereby said blades may have an opposite lateral movement with relation to one another and may be disen- I5 gaged when the head registers with the slot, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. MCKINLEY.
