FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,083, dated November 2, 1886 Application filed March 9, 188d. Serial No. 194,545. (No model.)
i To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE CUS'IER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Whitney, in the county of Hill and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the enable others skilled in the invention, which will art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which i r Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my improved file. Fig. 21s a face view of the same. Fig. 3 isa cross-section. Fig. 4is
, a perspective view of'another form of the file,
and Fig. 5 is a crosssection of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to files; and it consists in the improved construction and. combination of parts of afile having its teeth cut to extend half-way across the face from each edge and at an angle to each other, and having a longitudinal groove in the middle of each face, claimed.
I n the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the body of the file, the teeth B of which are cut at an angle to the edge of the file and extending only halfway across the face of the file, so that the two halves of the file will have their teeth inclined in opposite directions. 7 I g A groove, 0, is cut longitudina-llyin the middle of the file, and may be smooth or have the teeth of the face continued into it, and the crosssection of thegroove may either bev round, V-shaped, rectangular, or any other may be found preferable.
"In using this file it will be found that the dust or chips form the filing will be carried to ward the central groove by the converging teeth, and the dust and chips will be carried along the groove tothe end of the file, so that the file will keep its'elf clean and free from dust and chips, enabling the workman using the file to continue to file without removing the file from the work for the purpose of cleaning it, the file cleaning itself .without having to be taken off from the work.
The form of the file may be different, ac-
as. hereinafter more fully described and concave half-round, or any other shape which the labor to which the file is to be used may require, the improvement consisting in the longitudinal of the file.
In Fig. 4 is shown a file having halfround faces, one being convex and the other concave, and the tang or shank D projects from above the convex sideof the file, so as to bring the handle above the surface, upon which the concave face is used, and consequently bring the hand above it, allowing the file to be used for large surfaces. It follows thatthe tang may project in this manner from files having a flat face and a ,half-round face, or from one groove in the center of the face side of a file having two flat faces, the
object of having the tang projecting in that manner being to bring the hand above the sur-,
face to be filed, enabling large surfaces to be filed without bringing the hand of the operative in contact with the surface.
Having thus described my invention,l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States j l. A file having the teeth upon its faces so cut-that they extend halfway across the faces, meeting at their inner ends at an angle, and having a longitudinal groove at the meeting ends of the teeth, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. j
2. Afile having its tang projecting rearwardly from one face above the other face of the file, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3; A file having a half-round convex face,
witha tang projecting from one end of the said convex face above the same, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. V 4. A file having an upwardly and rearward-v ly bent tang projecting from the end of its half-round face, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
F GEORGE OUSTER.
