SClSSORS-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,146, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed J nne 2B, 1834. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. HILTON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors-Sharpeners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1, and showing, in section, a scissorsblade in place upon it.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient and reliable implement for sharpening scissors.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts,as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
A represents a block of wood, metal,or other suitable material, and which may be of any convenient length, breadth, and height. In the upper side of the block A is formed a rectangular longitudinal groove, B, of any convenient depth, and of sufficient width to allow the scissors-blade when placed within it to have a free movement. In the inner surfaces of the sides of the block A, at the bottom of the groove B,are formed angular grooves O,to receive and fit upon the side edges of the file D, which is made of triangular form, with a wide and, preferably,a smooth lower side, and with its narrower upper sides provided with file-teeth, the teeth of one side being made coarser than the other, if desired.
The upper sides of the ends of the block A are beveled or tapered, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the end of the sharpener can come close to the pivotal point of the scissors, and thus sharpen the cuttingedges of the blades for their entire length, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In using the sharpener, the blade of the scissors is placed in the groove B with its fiat side against the inner surface of one side of the block A, and its edge resting upon an inclined face of the file D, and the said blade and the sharpener are moved back and forth upon each other until the desired sharpness has been given to the said edge.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- .v
As an improved article of manufacture, scissors-sharpener consisting of the longitudinally-grooved block A, having beveled ends and provided with the angular grooves O, and the triangular file D, having one wide and two narrow sides and fitting in the grooves of the said block, as set forth.
