SHARPENER-FOR SCISSORS 0R KNI.VES.

UNTTE STATES .CHARLES C. WALLACE,
PATENT EETCE.
OF DELHI, NEW YORK.
SHARPENER FOR SCISSO RS OR KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,933, dated May 14, 1901.
Application filed March 23, 1900. Serial No. 9,894:- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. WALLACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delhi, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners for Scissors or Knives, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined scissors and knife sharpener. It has for its object the provision of such a device that can be cheaply made and which at the same time will be efficient in its'purpose.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, such as will be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view showing the holder. Fig. 2 isa similar view showing the hone. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4. In this view a scissors-blade is shown in position to be sharpened. Fig.4 is a cross-.
sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. In this view a knife-blade is shown in dotted lines in a position to be sharpened. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the under side of the base of the holder.
The holder 6 is made of malleable metal of any suitable character. It consists of the base 7, having the recesses 8 and the crosspiece 9. Projecting at right angles from the base and from its longitudinal edges are the sides 10 and 11, respectively. From the upper edges of these sides the flanges 12 and 13, respectively, extend toward each other. These flanges, together with the sides 10 and 11 and the base 7, form the casing for the hone let.
The hone "may be of any suitable material, such as stone or a metal file. Its width is considerably less than that of the receptacle in the casing, so that it may be adjusted therein to present'diiferent portions to the action of the blades that are sharpened. A setscrew 15 passes through the cross-piece 9 and impinges on the hone. By means of the setscrew the hone can be compressed between it and the flanges 12 and 13, and thereby held in place. The opposite faces 16 of the hone are slightly convex, so that when the hone is in position the face that is uppermost will project a short distance between the inner edges of the flanges l2 and 13, and thereby hold the bone against any tendency it may have to turn on the set-screw when the sharpener is used.
Means for guiding the blades overthe hones at the proper inclinations are provided. Integral with the flange 12 is the plate 17, having the smooth face 18 on the side nearest to the hone. The said face is inclined at such an angle as to cause the scissors-blade that is moved against it to take the proper bevel, as shown in Fig. 4. The flange 13 is wider than the flange l2 and projects to a greater distance over the hone-receptacle in the casing. Its upper face 19 is flat, and its inclination is 'such that when a knife-blade is placed upon the same, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, its edge will contact with the bone at the proper angle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sharpener, the combination of a holder consisting of a base, sides projecting from said base, and flanges projecting from said sides toward each other, a hone adjustable both side and end wise in said holder, a guide for a scissors-blade projecting from one of said flanges, a guide for a knife-blade projecting from the other of said flanges, and means for securing said hone in its adjustments in the holder.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES C. WALLACE.
