SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,755, dated September 12, 1899.
Application filed January 3l, 1899. Serial No. 704,049. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
13e it known that I, HERMANN ScHiPKn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Edge-Tool Sharpener, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to sharpening devices for edge tools, and has for its object to provide a simple and improved implement for holding a'iile or the like, and is especially designed for sharpening lawn-mower blades.
To this end the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts,as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken transversely through the clampinghead. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view ofthe cla1nping-head.
Corresponding parts are designated by like reference characters in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to t-he drawings, l designates a clamp-head having the upper and lower fixed jaws 2 and 3, respectively. The head is formed from a fiat approximately U-shaped casting having an integral outwardly and down-4 wardly beveled lip 4 upon theouter free end of the lower jaw 3. The upper jaw is provided with a threaded opening formed centrally through the jaw and communicating with the space between the jaws. This clamping-head is carried by a suitable handle 6,hav ing an approximately L-shaped shank 7 at one end thereof. One arm of the shank is fitted longitudinally in the end of the handle, and the other arm is threaded, as at S, and depends transversely across the end of the handle. A suitable iile-blade 9 or other abrasive surface is iitted snugly between the jaws of the head, and the threaded portion of the shank 7 is fitted in the opening 5 of the jaw 2. By turning the handle-body upon the shank as a center the threaded portion of the shank will act as a set-screw and clamp the iile-blade tightly between the jaws of the clampinghead. The file-blade should be wide enough to project beyond the guide-lip 4, so as to expose the abrasive under face of the file.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the clamping-head is set at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the handle and not squarely across the same. The le-blade is preferably of a length equal to that of the clamping-head, so that there may be no projections at either side of the device. The shank forminga setscrew maybe loosened and the file-blade adjusted out over the guide-lip 4, as desired, and the file may be reversed as it becomes worn.
In the operation of the device the handle is held in one hand with the shank extending out between the thumb and foreinger, and the guidelip 4 is placed against one edge of the blade to be sharpened, which disposes the iile against the transverse edge of the blade, and by moving the device back and forth upon the blade the iile will grind the transverse edge thereof. The guide-lip 4 may be given any desired bevel or inclination, so as to give the device the proper set. By reason of the disposition of the clamping-head the device has a drawing action upon the blade being sharpened, and the lip 4 guides the device and prevents accidental turning thereof.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction Within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed isl. An edge-tool Sharpenercomprisingahandle having a screw-threaded attaching-shank, and a clamping-head adapted to receive a iile, carried by the shank, said iile being held in position in the head by the attaching-shank which forms a set-screw for that purpose, substantially as shown and described. Y
2. An edge-tool sharpener, comprising a hair dle, a clamping-head adapted to receive a file and carried by the handle, said file and clamping-head being held at an angle oblique to and disposed at one side of the longitudinal plane of the handle, substantially as shown and described.
An ed ge-tool Sharpener, com prisin gallan- IOO dle having an attaching-shank, a substantially U -shaped clamping-head carried bythe shank, the head being adapted to receive a file which is adj ustably held in place by the shank, and a transverse guide-1i p projecting laterally from the outer end of one side of the head and beveled on its inner face, substantially as shown and described.
4. An edge-tool sharpener, comprisinga handie having a substantially L-shaped attaching-shank, a substantially U-shaped clamping-head carried bythe shank, and aiile-blade fitted between the sides oi' the U -shaped head, the shank being adapted to adjustably connect the le-blade to the head, substantially as shown and described.
5. An edge-tool sharpener, comprisingahandle having an attaching-shank, a clampinghead carried by the shank, and a file-blade fitted in the clamping-head, the shank being adapted to adjustably connect the file-blade my'own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
