To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that THOMAS J. JoNEs, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Catlin, in the county of Vermilion and tate of Illinois,has invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the invention is to, provide a simple and efiicient means for holding and sharpening scissor and shears under conditions which will insure a uniform bevelling of the edge with a proper draw set without necessitating relying on the skill and steadiness of hand of the operator in manipulating the sharpening implement. Further it is the purpose to provide a device of this kind in which any desired bevel may be given to the edge ofthe blade. It is also the purpose to provide a device with means whereby a scissors blade may be uniformly corrugated as is often desired in barbers shears. V
The invention is illustrated and described in a specific embodiment to which, however,
it is not. to be restricted further than the restrictions imposed by the appended claims.

The invention comprises three essential elements, the base A, the work carrier B,
and the tool carrier C. The base comprises the base bar 10 from which depends a clamp arm 11 for the reception of the manually operable clamping screw 12' by means of which the base portion may be attached to a table or the like. upper face of the base bar 10 and secured to the ends of the latter are the slide bearing 13 adapted for the reception of the rod 1 1, so that the latter iscapable of angular against theclamp, the pivotal attachment Projecting be ond the as well as longitudinal movement in the bearings. To limit longitudinal movement of the rod, a terminal stop15 is provided at the forward end and a similar stop at the rearend, these stops consisting of radial screws engaged in the rod adjacent its ex tremities. Supported by the rod and spaced slightly from the latter the base plate 16 ofthc work or blade carrier, radial studs 17 supporting the base plate 16 on the rod, At the one or forward end, the base plate of the work carrier carries the work or blade clamp consisting of a movable member 18 formed with a plurality of seats 19, for the reception of a scissors blade, the seat being spaced farther back from'the' forward edge of the clamping member 18 obviously being for, blades of greater width than those for 'which the 'forwardseat is provided. The
clamping member 18 is actuated by' aclamp ing screw 20 having a pivoted operating handle 21 by means. of which leverage may be had for the effective binding of the screw of the handle to the screw providing for moving the latter out of the way after the work has been attached. The pin, and slot connection, indicated at 22, precludes movement of the. clamping member out of proper position ,when the'clamp is loose as'when not engaged with a blade or work'to be harpened. s
The blade of a pair of scissors is attached beneath .theclamping member 18 when it is desiredjto sharpen the blade, as clearly shown in Figure l. -The'clamping member holds the scissors blade firmly in position for engagement by the sharpening element later described. The rod 19 being capable of longitudinal movement in its bearings provides for the longitudinal movement of the scissors blade during the sharpening operation or, it desired, the blade or work holder may be held stationary while the sharpening tool is oscillated before it comes. in contact with the blade. 7
In order that any desired; bevel may be given to the blade, means is provided for adjusting the base angularly with the rod 1 1 as a pivot and to thi end there is pro vided, onthe base block 10. a base 24, the upper end of which isrounded and provided with a transverse notch- 25 constituting a gauge point. Adjustably secured to thisblock 24 by means of a thumb screw 26 is a plate 27 formed with an arcuate slot 28 open at one end, the plate having its upper edge of arcuate contour and notched as indicated at 29 to provide definite indicating points for registration wit-h the point or notch 25 on the block 2%. The plate 27 is formed with a transverse slot 30 in which the rear side edge of the base plate of the work carrier slidably engages. Obviously the adjustment of the plate 16 by means of its slot 28 and screw 26 serves by means of the sliding engagement between the base plate 16 and the slot 30 to position the base plate in difierent. diagonal planes, thus disposing the scissors blades in a corresponding plane for the formation of a cutting edge at a more or less acute angle with respect to the fiat side of the blade. In other words this arrangement for bevelling the edge of the blade in the sharpening operation so as to secure any desired draw set.
The tool carrier it consists of a tool head constituting a yoke 31 adapted to hold either a file or an abrading tool or bit which may consist of a stone, both the file and the stone being regarded as alternately applicable tools for use in the sharpening operation. In'the present illustration the file 32 is secured to head and foot pieces 33 and 34: which are formed with pivot bearings for the reception of' the ends of the thumb screws 35 which are held in the desired position after adjustment by means of lock nuts 36 abutting the legs of the yoke. The tool, therefore, has pivotal movement in the yoke so as to follow the longitudinal contour of the scissors blade held in the work holder and reciprocatory or oscillatory movement of the tool 'is provided by means of links 37 the extremities of which are pivotally connected to the yoke respectively and to a bracket 38 which is pivotally secured to the base portion A by means of a pin 39 which extends through ears formed on the bracket 38 and corresponding ears formed respectively on the base bar 10 of the base A and in the extremity of a depending arm 40 carried by the base plate 10. The pivotal, mounting of the bracket 38 provides for swinging movement of the tool holder so that it may be kept in contact with the blade being operated upon irrespective of the contour of the latter longitudinally and the handle 41 provides for the imparting manually of oscillatory movement to the tool.
In the plain sharpening of the blade, after the work holder has been adjusted to give the desired angle, it may be held stationary and the tool oscillated to effect. the sharpening operation, the tool travelling transversely across the blade as well as longrtudinally of the blade, due to the particular form of connection between the yoke and the bracket 38. If the oscillatory movement of the yoke l it is not suflicient to cover the blade for the full length of the latter, the work holder may be shifted periodically until the sharpening tool has been brought into contact with the blade throughout the length thereof.
In the work of barbers and in other operations, the corrugations of one of the blades is essential and the device provides for the ready forming of the necessary corrugations on the blades. To this end there is provided an adjustable stop consisting of a flat bar provided with a slotted body portion 4L2 and a terminal finger 43 provided with a lateral terminal extension 4A which is designed to project laterally beyond the edge of the attached scissors blade, as shown in Figure l of the drawings. The thumb screw 4E5 threaded into the work holderbase plate 16 constitutes the means for locking the corrugating gauge member in place. In the operation of corrugating the blade edge, the gauge member is disposed initially as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The file or other sharpening member designed for use as the edge 46 facing the laterally deflected finger let is formed smooth, since this edge is designed to bear against the finger. As the tool holder is oscillated, pressure is effected on the extremity of the rod 14 or at some other point on the work holder, to maintain the finger in contact with the side edge of the file or sharpening member and thus as the latter is oscillated, the work holder reciprocates in consequence with the result that the file is continuously moving transversely across the scissors blade at the same point, the file teeth forming slight corrugations in the blade edge. After the corrugations are formed at the point adjacent the pivot the gauge member is adjusted to position the file at another point on the blade and so on until the blade is corrugated to its extremity.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A scissors sharpening apparatus having means for supporting a blade and a tool carrier movable in an arcuate path in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the blade support, the blade support consisting of a carrier movable in a path parallel with the plane of a blade supported thereby.
2. A scissors sharpening apparatus having means for supporting a blade and a tool carrier movable in an arcuate path in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the blade support, the blade: support consisting of a longitudinally movable carrier bar provided with a clamp for enthe scissors blade. scissors sharpening apparatus having means for supporting a blade and a tool carrier movable in an arcuate path in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the blade support, the blade support consisting of a longitudinally movable carrier bar provided with a clamp for engaging the scissors blade and having a clamping plate provided with a plurality of seats for selective engagement with the back edge of the scissors blade.
4. A scissors sharpening apparatus having means for supporting a blade and a tool carrier movable in an arcuate path in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the blade support and having supporting means consisting of a. crane bar mounted for lateral swinging movement and links connecting the tool holder with the crane bar-and arranged for swinging movement in a plane perpendicular to the path of the crane bar.
5. A scissors sharpening apparatus having a longitudinally movable work carrier provided with a scissors blade clamp, an oscillatory tool carrier movable toward and from the work carrier and provided with a pivotally mounted tool so that the latter may follow the longitudinal contour of an attached blade, and means for angularly adjusting the work carrier to provide for varying the bevel of the blade being sharpened.
6. A scissors sharpening apparatus having a longitudinally movable blade or work carrier, a pivotal oscillatory tool carrier, a tool pivotally mounted in said carrier, and a member carried by the work carrier and adapted for sliding engagement with the tool to insure the latters engaging the at tached work at the same point during the oscillation of the tool carrier and cone sponding reciprocation of the work carrier as specified.
7. A scissors sharpening apparatus having a blade or work carrier, an oscillatory tool carrier provided with a pivotally mounted tool, and means carried by the work carrier and operatively engaging the tool to insure its actuation on the work at the same point during the oscillation of the tool carrier and the consequent reciprocation of the work carrier.
