Description

M r 1930. A. H. BROUGHER SCISSORS SI-IARPENER Filed June 1 1924 4. 1 BPOUCiA-VEZQ. INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
scIssons 'snanrnn'na Application filed June 14,
This invention relates to a sharpening device, and more particularly to a scissors sharpener.
One of the main objects of the invention is 6 to provide simple and efiic-ient means whereby edged tools, such as shears, scissors, etc,
can be uickly and easily sharpened. A
further ject is to provide a device of this character of simple construction which may be readily produced at comparatively small cost. Further objects will appear from the detail description.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side view of the sharpener;
Fig. 2 is a front view;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
The sharpener includes a clamping device or vise formed of jaws 1 and 2 hinged together at their lower ends at 3 and forced toward ,0 each other by means of a wing nut 4 threaded on a screw-stud 5 secured in jaw 1 and extending through jaw Preferably, though not necessarily, an expansion spring 6 is mounted a out stud 5 and confined between the jaws s0 as to move jaw 2 away from jaw 1 for opening the vise or clamp when nut 4 is threaded oil of the stud. Jaw 1 of the vise is provided with a depending L-shaped arm 7 through the lower element of which is threaded a pressure screw 8 which co-operates with lugs 9 between which element 10 of jaw 2 is hingedly secured,
1 to form a clamp for securing the vise to .a
bench or other support.
. Jaw 1 is provided at its upper end with a substantially L-shaped supporting arm 11 at the upper end of which is formed a slotted head 12 in which is pivotally secured, by a pin 13, an eye 14 provided at the upper end of an operating rod 15. A cylindrical abrasive member 16, such as a. file or a cylinder of any suitable or preferred abrasive material, is
loosely mounted on rod 15 and is urged in a direction away from head 12 by means of an expansion coil spring 17 mounted about the rod and confined bet-ween head 12 and member 16. A pinion 17 is secured on the lower end of member 16 and meshes with a rack 18 carried by jaw 12, this rack being concentric with the pin 13. For convenience in operation, a handle 19 is provided at the lower end.
1924. Serial No. 720,060.
of rod 15, and downward movement of pinion 17, and consequently member 16, is positively limited by a flange 20 extending upwardly from the outer portion of rack 18.
In using the device, blade A of a pair of' shears or scissors, is securely clamped between jaws 1 and 2 in such position that member 16 is in contact with the portion of the blade which it is desired to sharpen. In this connection, attention is called to the fact that rod 15 is disposed at an angle across the vise, this angle corresponding to the usual angle or bevel which is given to the cutting edges of scissors, shears, and similar tools. When blade A is in position in the vise and properly adjusted for sharpening, member 16 is in contact with the blade and is held raised slightly so as to hold the teeth of pinion 17 spaced a slight distance. above the teeth of rack 18, as illustrated in Fig. 3. By grasping handle 19 and movin rod 15 back and forth about pin 13, the abrasive member 16 is rotated so as to grind the edge of blade A at the proper angle thus sharpening the blade.
During this operation downward pressure is exerted 011 handle 19 thus giving a spring pressure on member 16, it being understood that rod 15 possesses appreciable resiliency for this purpose. When the blade has been sharpenedor' round down to the desired extent, the teet of pinion 17 enter to their full extent between the teeth of rack 18 thus limiting downward movement of member 16 so that this member exerts no further rinding effect upon the blade. After a portlon of the blade has been ground in this manner, the blade may be released and readjusted in the vise, after which another portion of the blade is ground,.this being continued until the blade has been ground for its full length. For sharpening scissors and shears having comparatively short blades, the rack 18 and associated parts may be made of sufiicient length to sharpen the blade for the full length thereof at one portion. The proper adjustment of member 16 may be readily accomplished by inserting a wedge or block of a predetermined thickness between the u per end of jaw 2 and member 16, after w nch blade A may be adjusted so as to contact with member 16, the blade being then securely clamped-in the vise, after which the block is removed and the blade ground in the manner described.
What I claim is A tool sharpening device comprising a vise including jaw members hingedly secured to each other, means for securing the jaw members with respect to a fixed sup ort, a sup- 10 porting arm formed with and extendin from onelof said jaw members, a slotted hea formed with the free end of said arm, a rod having one end pivotally secured in the slot of the head, a rack formed with the other 15 arm and arranged concentrically with respect to the pivot of the rod, a handle formed with the free end of said rod, a pinion mounted on the rod, a cylindrical abrasive member mounted on said rod and meshing with the 20 teeth of the rack, a coil spring having its end convolutions engageable with the slotted head and adjacent end of the abrasive member respectively, said jaw members being adapted to receive a tool for arrangement in the path 25 of the abrasive member, and said abrasive member being disposed at an inclination.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
