- The primary object of thelinvention is the provision of a tool sharpening device of this character and adapted for manual opei'ation, which is simple in construction and combinations and arrangements of parts .in-'
volving these structures as will hereinafter be more fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I; hay eillustrated one complete example of the physin plat-e 11, which at its upper end is provided with; a widened head 12 complementary to cal embodiment of my invention applied for the purpose of sharpening scissors, in which the parts are combined and arranged according to one mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.

In order that the utility, general assembly and arrangement of parts may readily be understood I have. shown in Figure 3 a pair of scissors S of which the bevel-edge blade B is to be sharpened. In carrying out my invention I preferably use a supporting frame which may rest upon the lap, of the person sharpening the scissors, on atable, or other suitable support, and the supporting frame is composed of a base plate 1 having a transversely disposed arm 2 secured thereto as by rivet 3, andthe base-arm and plate are sufficient width and length to form a stable support forthe sharpening device.

The u-shaped yoke is preferably fash- I rolled of resilient metal with an attaching 1 .means of a wing nut 15. the yoke may be clamped in adjusted position with relation to the post 6 with the attaching plate 11 and its head in closed frictional contact with the post 6 and its head 7. By properly adjusting the yoke the work holder may be adapted for use withblades of various widths, the
slot 10 being of sufficient length to permit the Vertical adjustment of the yoke of the work holder.
At its upper end the outer arm of the yoke is fashioned with a head 16 which curves toward and over the upper edge 13 of th'efyokehead 12,and as the metal of the yoke is resilient, itwill be apparent that the wing nut 15, when turned on its bolt, not only holds to rigidly clamp the blade in the .work holdor as shown in Figure 1. The blade is clamped in position with its beveled cutting edge arranged for sharpening, and the tool holder that it manually reciprocated is moved through the same plane as that of the beveled edge.
The tool holdercomprises an arm 18 and a clamp-head 19, the latter of U-shape, and
provided with a clamping screw or bolt 20. At 21 the clamp-head is fashioned with a slot with its lower wall forming an extension and flush with the upper face of the lower jaw of the clamp head, and a file as-QQ (here shown as the workingtool) is secured by the bolt 20 in the head. The fileis slipped through the slotted head with its lower face resting on the upper face of th'e'lower jaw of the head, and the screw or bolt 20 is used to clamp the file rigidly in the slotted head. If desired, the file may be removed, and an abradinp; stone may be clamped in the head by means of the bolt 20, or other suitabletool may be secured in the head 19.
The rear end of the arin18 is supportec on the rest 5 and at its front end the tool holder is supported by means of thefile on the scissors blade B; The height of the rest and of the work-holding head are so related that the tool-holder is preferably'inclined as.
indicated in Figure 1, but in all cases, the 7 lower face of the file that contacts with the blade to be sharpenedis parallel with the beveled edge of the blade. Thus the tile holder or tool holder, supported asjshown may manually be reciprocated while supported on. the rest and the blade to sharpen the latter, and the desired pressure may be imposed on the tool-holder by the hand. The file, may move transversely at right angles to the blade, or it may be moved diagonally across the blade if desired, and it is moved longitudinallyot the blade and rest as the sharpening progresses in order that the full length of the blade =inay be sharpened. It will be apparent that after the Work-holder and tool-holder have. been properly set, the latterinay be reciproeated with relation to the stationary work holder and the blade sharpened withaccuracy and facility.
Various types of files may be used, and
various types or abrading tools may be used in the head of the tool-holder, and other changes may be made in the illustrated device, within the scope of. my appended claim, without departing from the principles of my invention.
