Application fil dseptember 22,1922. Serial-No. 590,133;
To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that we, EDWARD R. June and LOUIS MINNIOK, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife and Scissors Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates toimprovements in knife and scissors Sharpeners, and one object is to produce a simple device of this character which can be usedby an unskilled per-' son with good results.
Another object is to provide a sharpener justed into the use from time to time as they wear away from use. I v
Another object is toprovide suitable guides for directing a knife or pair of scissors into proper relation with the abrading disks, so that practically anyone will be able to bring the object being sharpened into contact with said disks to the best advantage. A further object is to provide a device of this character which can be manufactured at relatively small cost and is not likely to get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view, reference will now be had to the accompany ingr drawing, in which:
ig. 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig; 4 is a plan view of the device. v
In carrying out the invention, we employ a bracket 2, having a pair of rearwardly projecting arms 4 and 6, respectively, the arm 6 being provided with a thumb-screw 8, which coacts with the arm 4 in holding the bracket 2 upon a. support, such as a table, bench, etc. 4
1O designates an abrading disk journaled upon a screw 12 extending through the upper portion of the bracket 2 and secured at its 7 rear end by a nut 14, which may be'tightened to hold the disk stationary, orloosened so that said disk may be rotated from time to time to bring a new cutting surface into contact with the object being sharpened. Said disk 10 may be made of any suitable abrading material, as stone, steel, carborundum,
etc.
15 designates a bifurcated guide for coacting with the disk 10 in sharpening a pair in which new abrading surfaces can be ad-,
'of scissors. The edges 17 of said guide 15 are beveled in, order, to allow thescissors'.
blade A to be drawn atan angle'across the disk 10, to give the proper edge to said scissors.
16 desi natesa V-shaoed uide at one side of the guide 15'and adaptedto coact with the disk 10 in sharpening knives, etc.
18 designates a second abrading disk mounted on a screw 20 secured by a nut 22.
The screw 20 extends through a slot 24 in the bracket 2, so that the disk 18 can be moved closer to the disk 10 to take up wear. 26 designates a V-shaped guide in the 013 posite side of the bracket 2 containing the guide 16. I Said guide 26 is adapted to coact with the disk 18 in sharpening-knives. 1 The edges 27 and 29 of the grooves 16 and 26 are p beveled to hold the knives in proper relation to the disks 10 and 18, respectively. 7 The operation is. as follows: In sharpening a pair of scissors, one blade is placed against one side of the guide 15 and then drawn j back and forth across the disk 10 until sharpened, after which'the other blade is sharpened in alike manner, the beveled edges 17 of the guide 15 holding the respective blades in proper relation to the disk 10.
In sharpening a knife it may be placed in' either the groove '16 or 26 and drawn back and forth across the respective disks ,;10 and 18, or said knife may be sharpened by draw-' ing it back and forthbetween theperipheries of said disks 10' and 18, as indicated at B. If it is desired to give afine or 'thin: edge to the knife blade the two diskslO andthe nut- 22 and sliding the screw 20 in the groove 24:. 'As the disks 10 and'18become worn from use their respective screws 12 and 20may be loosened. thus allowing said disks to-be rotated to bring new sharpening surfaces into position, after which they are again held stationary by tightening said screws 12 and 20; a
While we have shownthe preferred embodiment of our invention, we reserve the of the appended claim.
Having thus described our inventiomwhat We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
Ina device of the character described, a bracket provided'With means for securing 5 it to a support, a pair of abrading disks associated with said bracket, V-shaped guides formed in opposite sides of the bracket for supporting knife, blades in, position to besharpened against the periphery of said 10 disks, and a bifurcated guide on the bracket for holding scissor blades in position to be sharpened against the periphery of one of the disk-s.
In testimony whereof We afliX our signav
