Beit known that I, WALTER C. B. FARRAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Huntington, in the county .of Huntington and State of Indiana, have 1nvented certain new and usefulv Improvements in Devices for Sharpening Shears, of which the following is a specification, reiierence being had therein to the `accompanying drawing. Y
' This invention relates to a device for sharpening shears and has for its principal object the productionof a simple and effi cient meansfor supporting a pair of shears at a desired angle so as to allow the same to be easily engagedl by a reciprocatory stone for imparting the correct bevel to the shears as the same are bein sharpened.
Another object o this invention ,is the production of a device for sharpening shears which is provided with a fcldable guide post which carries reciprocating rod to which the stone is supported whereby the stone may easily reciprocate for sharpening a pair oshea-rs carried by the device.
Another object of this invention is the production of an adjustable devicev for holding the shears in a set position whereby the shears may be easily sharpened while the same are held in a position to allow the correct bevel to be imparted thereto.
Still another object of this inventionv is tlielproduction of adevice for sharpening shears in which the portions' are adapted to' be supported for accommodating different sized shears, these portions being capable of being folded to assume a compact position when the device is not in use.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter Jully described and claimed. y In the accompanying drawing :-Fi re 1 is a side'elevation partly in section o the improved device showing the same in a setup position and ready to sharpen a pair of shears. . lReferring to the accompanying drawing by numerals 1 designates the clamp body 455 which is formed so as to constitute a substantially U-shaped clamp which carries at 'its lower portion 2 the screw 3. This clamp is adapted to be positioned upon a support 4 soas to allow the screw 3 to be threaded into engagement with the support for detachably retaining the clamp in engagement with the support 4. The clamp body 1 has an enlarged portion 5 from which extend the bearing ears 6. These ears 6 are adapted to rest upon the support 4 to more eiiiciently retain the clamp against shaking or bobhing when in use. The enlarged portion 5 is provided with teeth 7 formed upon its inner lsurface which are adapted to en age the teeth 8 of the jaw 9 ofthe vise. Aolt 10 passes through.the lower portion of the jaw 9 and the enlarged portion 5v of the clamp body v1 and the wing-nut 11 is threaded into engagement with the bolt 10 so as t'o hold the teeth 7 and 8 in engagement' with each other thereby holding thevise in a set position when in use.

This bolt 20 passes through the pocket 22 formed in the ]aw 9 and the projection 23 and upon the outer end of this bolt there is threaded the wing nut 24. As this wing nut is threaded into engagement with the bolt 20 the jaws 9 and 14 will be drawn toward each other and, therefore'7 when the blade of a pair of shears is positioned between the angular-ly extending portions 17 andlS of these iawsthe shears will be held in clamped engagement with the vise.- In order to lio'rce the jaws apart as soon as the nut 24 has been loosened on the bolt, there is provided a coiled spring which is positioned upon the bolt 20 and rests within the pocket rlhis spring 25 bears at one end against a shoulder 20 formed on the jaw 14 and'at the opposite end againstv the inner end of th-e projection 23 ad]acent the. pocket 22. It will be seen that as-soon` as the spring has forced the jaws 9 and 14 apart the shears which have `been clamped-in engagement with the vise be easily removed. n order to support a'stone and a reciprocating rod therefor, there is provided a foldable Aggguide post. This guide post comprises a primary section 26 and an auxiliary section 27 which are pivotally secured together by means of the screw 28. The primary section 26 has an integral wedgelike portion 29 which isi-adapted to fit in the V-shaped notch 30 of the integral finger 3l of the clamp body l.' This primary section 26 is also provided with the transverse aperture 32 for the reception of the pivot screw 33 v whichpas'ses through the linger 31 and aperture 32 for pivotally securing the oldable guide post in engagement with the clamp. The auxiliary section 27 .is provided with an opening 34 through which the quadrant 35 is adapted to pass.V This quadrant has a threadedend 36 which isadapted to engage the primary section 26 of the foldablne guide post. The thumb screw 37 is carried by the auxiliary section 27 of the foldable guide post so as to come into binding engagement with the quadrant 35,A thereby retaining the' auxiliary section 27 at different angles along the quadrant 35. `Adjacent the upper end of the Yauxiliary section 27 there is provided a notched portion 38 which is adapted to carry the plate 39, this plate being held in position by means of the screws 40. The plate 39 and the upper end of the auxiliary section 27 are provided with the beveled portions 41 which vform a socket in which the ball 42 is carried. This ball 42 is provided with an opening 43 extending therethrough through which the rod 44 is slidably mounted. This rod 44 is adapted to engage the clamp block 45 by means of the threaded portions 4G; A simi-lar rod 47 is threaded into engagement'with the clamp block 45 as shown at 48 while. the opposite end of the rod 47 passes through the nut 49 positioned within the handle 50. Positioned adjacent the portions to bind upon the end por-y tions of the stone for detachably retaining the stone in position. As soon as the stone has been clamped the stone may be reciproeated back and forth by means ofthe handle, since the rod 44 will be allowed to freely reciprocate through the ball 42 without imparting lost .motion or binding.
lVhen this device is in use, the foldable guide post isswung so as to allow the auxiliary section 27 to assume a substantially vertical position. The jaws 9 and 14 of the vise may be separated so as to allow the blade of a pair of shears to be positioned therebetween. The wing-nut 24 may then draw the jaws of the vise into engagement with the shears for gripping and holding the same for sharpening. T he wing-nut l1 may then herloosened upon the bolt 10 so as to. allow the'vise to be swung to a desired position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 at which timevthe nut-may be tightened for holding the vise in a set position. If the bevel of the shears does not rest evenly upon the stone then the auxiliary Section 27 of the guide post may be swung upon the quadrant to lallow the stone to assume the correct angle. T hethumb screw 37A may then be tightened: so to hold theguide- ,of the shears which will project beyond the.
side portions ol the vise as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. .\s soon as the Yblade has been sharpened the nut 24 may be quickly lbosened on the. bolt 2() at which time the spring 25 will -lorce the jaws of the vise apart so as to allow the jaws to be opened so that-the shears nav then be removed.
By having the wedge-like portion 29 fitting within the V-shapedpocket 30 of the finger lll any tendenev ol lateral movement by the folded guide post will be greatly reduced, thus relieving the strain 'from the pivot screw 33. When the device is not in lso, the vise may be swung and held in a vertical position. The rod 44 may then be removed to rest upon the primary section 26 as shown io. dotted lines in Fig. 1. The screw 3 may f compact position when e removed from engagement with the supl 'ort 4 at which time the clamp 1 may be fted rorn engagement with the support.
The primary section 26 of the folded guide #est may then be swung upwardly soas to entend in a vertical parallel plane with the vise. The rod 44 may also be removed from engagement with the clamping block so that the entire device will assume a very not in use.
From the foregoing seen that a simple and an efficient device has been produced for sharpening shears which may be easily adjusted to accommodate different sized shears so as to hold the shears in a correct position for allowing the shears 'to reciprocally engage the stone for allowing the same to be sharpened.
It is obvious that many minor details of construction may be changed in the construction of this invention without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore .it is desired to include all such devices as properly come within the scope of the device as claimed.
What I claim is l. In a sharpening device comprising a supporting body, a vise adjustablysecured to said body, a foldable guide post pivotally secured to 4said body, means reciprocally lsupported by said guide post for supporting a stone, said means being adapted to reciprocate said stone adjacent the outer end of said vise, whereby a blade. carried by said vise may be sharpened.
2. In a sharpening device of the class described, the combination with a supporting body, a vise adj ustably secured to said body,
said vise comprising a pair'of jaws, one of said jaws being pivotally engagement with a blade carried thereby, a oldably guide post secured to said supporting body, a ball carried by said guide post, rod slidably mounted through said ball,
description it will be secured to the other jaw, means for retalnlng said jaws 1n and means carried by said rod for clamping upon a stone whereby a stone may be reciprocally adjusted adjacent the outer, end of said vise, for sharpening a blade'carried-by said vise.
3. In a sharpening device of the class described'thecombination with a supporting member, a vise adjustably secured to said supporting member, a foldable guide post pivotally secured to saidsupporting member, a ball carried by said foldable guide post, a rod passing through said ball and adapted to freely reciprocate, aclamping block secured to said rod, a second rod engaging said clamping block, a clamping block slidably moun'ted upon said last-mentioned rod, a handle threaded into engagej ment with said last-mentioned -rod whereby said last-mentioned clamping block may be moved 'upon said first-mentioned vclamping block for clamping a stone, said rods. being adapted to reciprocate, a stone lcarried by said clamping block adjacent the outer end of said vise whereby a blade carried by said vise may be sharpened.
4. In a sharpening device of the class de scribed the combination with a supporting member, a vise adjustably secured to said supporting member, a foldable guide post pivotally secured to said supporting Ameinber, said guide post comprising a primary and an auxiliary section, said primary section being adapted to space said-auxiliary section at a spaced distance from said vise, means for retaining said auxiliary section in an adjusted set position, a' ball carried by said auxiliary section, said ball provided with a central opening, a slidable clamping means engaging said ball, said slidable clamping means adapted to engage a stone whereby a stone may be reciprocated adja-A cent the outer end of said vise-for sharpening a blade carried thereby.
