The stop 20 fits the V-shaped aperture seen on top in Fig. I at that point, and stop 2| fits the V-shaped aperture formed below, when the shear blades are in the position shown in Fig. I and Fig. II. Such stops prevent upward and downward movement of the shears at that point, prevent longitudinal movement of the shears toward stop 9, and maintain the shear blades in an open position.
A stop 9 is formed from the body element and is shaped and positioned to maintain the handle ll of the shear blade being sharpened. Stop 9 is forked as disclosed in Fig. I, and prevents upward, downward and inward, that is toward the rear wall, movements of the handle II.
A stop I6 is also formed integral with the body element I and is shaped to maintain the handle I! of the shear blade not being sharpened. It is so positioned that the shear blade not being sharpened will be held out of contact with the hone. This stop prevents an upward movement of the handle, thus maintaining the shear blade being sharpened in a fixed plane. Inasmuch as such handle rests on the body element I, downward movement of the handle is prevented by the body element. Longitudinal movement of the shears toward stop 9 is also prevented by stop l6.
Means must be supplied to prevent longitudinal movement of the shears in direction toward stop 8, as the device with the shears in position, is drawn across the abrading surface. In addition, means must be supplied to prevent outward movement from the body element, if the device with the shears in position, is lifted away from the abrading surface for another stroke over such surface. Both movements may be prevented by manually holding the shears in position and against the stops. However, I find it more satisfactory to prevent such movements by mechanical means. I find one satisfactory method is to make the stop 9 hold the handle II by spring tension jaws. Stop [6 likewise has spring tension to hold handle I1.
I find it more satisfactory to prevent the movements mentioned in the preceding paragraph, to clamp the handles H and I! by means of an adjustable clamp, Such clamp 2 is securable to the body element, and has'jaws 2A and 23 disposed adjacent to its front edge. The jaw 2A engages the shear handle [1, and the jaw 2B engages the shear handle II. The clamp 2 is furcatecl at its rear and a clamping screw I8 is threaded to the body element and passes between the furcated Jaws.
In use, the shear blades are opened; the back of one of the shear blades is placed against the lower edge 30 of the body element and under stop 8; stops 20 and 2| engage the V-shaped apertures between the pivot of the shear blades and the handles thereof; the handle II is positioned in stop 9; the handle I! is positioned in stop Hi. If the clamp 2 is used, jaw 2A is placed to hold handle I! against the stops I6, 20 and 2| and jaw 23 is placed to hold handle I 1 against stops 9, 20 and 2| and to hold the shear blade against the lower edge 30 of the body element and under stop 8. The shears are thus held in an extremely rigid and locked position for being honed.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the embodiment herein shown and described, as; it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element and fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade being sharpened, a stop formed from the body element fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and an adjustable clamping holder having a jaw disposed at one of the sides which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and having a jaw disposed at the other side which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade being sharpened.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element and fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade being sharpened, a stop formed from the body element fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and an adjustable clamping holder having a jaw disposed at one of the sides which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and having a jaw disposed at the other side which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade being sharpened.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made ofa single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element and fashioned to receive the handle of the shear vblade being sharpened, and an adjustable clamping holder having a jaw disposed at one of the sides which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and having a jaw disposed at the other side which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade being sharpened.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which-forms an abutment against which the back'of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body'element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and an adjustable clamping holder having a jaw disposed at one of the sides which is adapted toengage the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and having a jaw disposed at the other side which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade being sharpened.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V- shaped aperture formed by; the back of the shear blade being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and an adjustable clamping holder having a jaw disposed at one of the sides which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and having a jaw disposed at the other side which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade being sharpened.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element and fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade being sharpened. a stop formed from the body element fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened.
7. In a device of the classdescrib'ed,:the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the-back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable. rear. wall which .depends'from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade being sharpened and the handle of the. shear blade not being sharpened whenthe blades are open, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element with spring tension jaws and fashioned to receive and fix the handle of the shear blade being sharpened, a stop formed from the body element with av spring tension jaw and fashioned to receive and fix the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a 'stop fashioned to engage the V- shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element with spring tension jaws and fashioned to receive and fix the handle of the shear blade being sharpened, a stop formed from the body element with a spring tension jaw and fashioned to receive and fix the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V- shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element with spring tension jaws and fashioned to receive and fix the handle of the shear blade being sharpened, a stop formed from the body element with a spring tension jaw and fashioned to receive and. fix the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop formed from the body element with spring tension jaws and fashioned to receive and fix the handle of the shear blade being sharpened, a stop formed from the body element with a spring tension jaw and fashioned to receive and fix the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a body element made of a single piece the top surface of which is inclined upwardly from its front edge, the front edge of which forms an abutment against which the back of the shear blade rests, an adjustable rear wall which depends from the rear edge of the body element, a stop formed from the body element against which the inside of the shear blade being sharpened rests, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop fashioned to engage the V-shaped aperture formed by the back of the shear blade not being sharpened and the handle of the shear blade being sharpened when the blades are open, a stop formed from the body element fashioned to receive the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and an adjustable clamping holder having a jaw disposed at one of the sides which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade not being sharpened, and having a jaw disposed at the other side which is adapted to engage the handle of the shear blade being sharpened.
