SAFETY RAZOR BLADE HOLDER Filed Jan. 23. 1961 INVENTOR. EARL J. EVERTO/V A 7' TOR/VE Y This invention relates to an improved safety razor blade holder.
The present invention provides an improved razor blade holder of the type adapted for use in dressing or honing double edge safety razor blades.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel safety razor blade holder having two relatively adjustable blade engaging members, one of which is adapted to be easily adjusted with respect to the other to permit the attachment and the subsequent detachment of a double edge safety razor blade.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved razor blade holder which is adapted to hold a double edge safety razor blade securely when dressing or honing the blade.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an improved safety razor blade holder which embodies means for securely holding a double edge blade against displacement.
Other and further objects of my invention will be pointed out hereinafter or will be indicated in the appended claims or will be obvious to one skilled in the art upon an understanding of the present disclosure. For the purpose of this application, I have elected to show herein details of a safety razor blade holder which is representative of my invention; it is to be understood, however, that the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described is for purposes of illustration only, and that therefore it is not to be regarded as exhaustive of the variations of the invention in the art.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a safety razor blade holder embodying my invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of FIG. 1, showing the blade engaging members positioned to hold a blade securely;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the relatively adjustable blade engaging members positioned to permit the removal or attachment of a blade;
FIG. 5 is a composite perspective view showing the various parts of the holder in detachable positions.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an elongated, structurally rigid element having upstanding parallel laterally spaced guide flanges 2, 2 of the same length, and a forwardly disposed razor blade engaging and supporting member or clamping jaw 3, the upper surface 3a of which is substantially fiat except for an upstanding transverse protuberance or rib 4, arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the elongated element. The elongated element 1 is formed with a rearwardly inclined transversely extending shoulder 5 which connects the flat upper surface 3a of the clamping jaw 3 with a flat upper surface In extending between the upstanding flanges 2,, 2. The forward side of the upstanding rib 4 is rearwardly inclined while its rear side is substantially vertical. The fiat upper surfaces 111 and 3a of the element 1 and the clamping jaw 3, respectively, lie in substantially parallel planes, and the shoulder 5 separating such flat surfaces is inclined at about fortyfive degrees (45), more or less, with respect thereto as is also the inclined forward side of the rib 4. The element 1 is longitudinally slotted as at 6, and the area on the underneath side of the said element adjacent the 3,073,572 Patented Feb. 26, 1963 slot is preferably grooved as at 7. The forward edge of the clamping jaw 3 is disposed in parallel relationship with respect to the rib 4. The forward ends of the guide flanges 2, 2 are rearwardly disposed with respect to the transverse shoulder 5.
Mounted for forward and rearward adjustment on the elongated element 1 is an elongated structurally rigid adjustable element 8, a substantial portion of which is positioned between and in engagement with the guide flanges 2, 2. The adjustable element 8 is formed with an enlarged forwardly disposed head or clamping jaw 9 which is adapted to engage with a rectangular safety razor blade B supported on the clamping jaw 3. The razor blade B is of the type embodying a well known construction having a longitudinal slot which is adapted to receive the transverse rib 4. When held in a clamped position between the jaws 3 and 9, the forward cutting edge of such blade is adapted to project forwardly of and lie in parallel relationship to forward edges of the jaws. The lower side of the jaw 9 is formed with a transverse groove 10 which is arranged to receive the rib 4 of the jaw 3. The forward side of the transverse groove 10 is inclined rearwardly at an angle of about forty-five degrees (45), more or less, with respect to the fiat underneath side of the jaw 9, and the rear side of such groove lies in a vertical plane, and such forward and rear sides are adapted to engage with the forward and rear sides, respectively, of the rib a when the jaws are in clamping relationship with respect to the razor blade. The elongated adjustable element 8 is provided at its lower side with a transverse rearwardly inclined shoulder 11 arranged to engage with the shoulder 5 of the member 1 when the jaws 3 and 9 are in clamping relationship with respect to each other.
The elongated elements 1 and 8 which are substantially the same in length are held in adjustably connected relationship with respect to each other by a bolt 12 and a nut 13, the bolt extending through a suitable hole 14 in the element 1 and also through the slot 6 of the element 8. The nut 13 screwed onto the threaded end of the bolt is positioned in the groove 7, and such nut is adapted to slide therein as the adjustable element 8 is adjusted backwardly and forwardly. Interposed between the head of the bolt 12 and the elongated element 8 is an arcuate or other suitable compression spring 15 which imposes a suitable pressure upon the elongated elements 1 and 8 to hold the jaws 3 and 9 normally in clamping relationship with a razor blade B. The head or clamping jaw 9 is formed at its rear end with outwardly disposed shoulde-rs 9a which are adapted to abut the forward ends of the guide flanges 2, 2 when such clamping jaw is adjusted rearwardly with respect to the clamping jaw 3. The forward edges of the clamping jaws 3 and 9 lie in a common vertical plane when the rib 4 is lodged in the groove 10.
The tension of the spring 15 may be varied by adjusting the nut 13 on the bolt 12, but for all practical purposes the spring tension is such that the jaws 3 and 9 may be held in firmly clamped relationship with respect to the razor blade 13 while at the same time permitting the rearward and forward adjustment of the element 8 with respect to the element 1. When a suitable rearward pressure is applied by ones fingers to the element 8 to slide such element rearwardly on the element 1, the en gaging inclined shoulders 5 and 11 in combination with the engaging inclined slides of the rib 4 and the groove 10 raise the element 8 and its clamping jaw 9 upwardly to positions wherein the clamping jaws 3 and 9 are no longer in clamping relationship with respect to each other or to a blade B, if the latter happens to be then supported on the jaw 33. When the jaws 3 and 9 are so positioned, the fiat underneath side of the jaw 9 will be resting on the flat upper surface 1a of the element 1, as shown in FIG. 4. A razor blade B may be placed on the lower jaw 3 and arranged so the transverse rib 4 on such jaw projects through the longitudinal slot of the blade. By returning the element 8 and its jaw 9 forwardly, such jaw automatically drops downwardly by reason of the spring tension as soon as the shoulder 11 becomes positioned forwardly by the shoulder 5, thereby bringing the jaws 3 and9'into clamping relation with respect to the blade.
The lower side of the jaw 3 and the upper side of the jaw. 9 are similarly curved to provide smooth surfaces which are adapted to engage with a strap or stone when dressing or honing the forward cutting edge of the blade. When the clamping jaws 3 and .9are in clamping relationship with each other, the vertical rear side of the rib 4 is in locking engagement with the rear side of the groove and also the rearside of the slot of the razor blade B, thereby preventing the forward displacement of the upper jaw 9 with respect to the lower jaw 3. and also normally preventing the forward displacement of .the blade when the holder is moved rearwardly during a dressing or honing operation. The elements 1 and 8 are su'fliciently'long to provide handle means at their rear end portions for conveniently handling the holderduring a blade stropping or dressing operation.
.What I claim is:
.1. In a holder for safety razor blades of the type having alongitudinal slot, a pair of elongated relatively. adjustable elements having forwardly disposed clamping jaws arranged for vclamping engagement with a razor blade positioned therebetween, one of the elements being adjustable rearwardly and forwardly with respect to the other element, one of the jaws'having a transverse groove arranged at right angles to the longitudinalaxes of the elements,,the other jaw having a transverse protuberance arranged in parallel relati-onto the transverse groove; the said protuberance'being adapted toextend through t he slot, in ,the blade ,and into the transversegroove when the jaws are. in clamped relationship with the-blade, the transversegrooveand the protuberance beingsoarranged with respect totheforward edges of the jaws that the blade will be disposed with a cutting edge thereof extending forwardly of the jaws when. the jaws are in clamped relationship to the blade, one of the elements having a hole thereinandthe other element having'a longitudinal slot registering with the hole, abolt extending through the hole and the slot, the bolt having a head -at one end and .a threaded portion at its other end, a nut attached to the threaded portion of the bolt and arranged in slidable engagement with the element having the slot therein, a compression spring interposed between the head of the bolt and the element having the hole therein, whereby the jaws are normally but releasably held in clamped engagement withtherazor blade, and the elements being relatively adjustable longitudinally to release the blade.
2. In a holder for safety razorrblades of-the type having a longitudinal slot, a pair of elongated relatively adjustable elements having for-wardly disposed clamping jaws arranged for clamping engagement with afrazor blade positioned therebetween, one of theelements being adjustable rearwardly and forwardly with respect to the other element, one of the jaws having a transverselydisposed groove arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axesof elements, the other jaw having a transverse protuberance arranged in parallel relation to the groove, the said protuberance being adapted to extend through the slot in the blade and into the transverse groove when the jaws are in clamped relationship with the blade, the transverse groove and protuberance being so arranged with respect to the forward edges of the jaws that the blade will be disposed with the cutting edge thereofextending forwardly of the jaws when the jaws are in clamped relationship with the blade,.the said elements having similar rearwardly inclined transverse shoulders disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axes of the elements and arranged to engage with eachother when the jaws are in clamping relationship with. the blade, and the forward sides of the slot and the protuberance being rearwardly inclined and lying in planes substantially, parallel to the inclined shoulders. of the elements.
