UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAROUS E. Karma, 01' CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE PRESSED IETAI. PROD- UCTS OOIPANY,'OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, .A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SCBAPING TOOL.
Application filed August 25, 1927. Serial No. 215,295.
This invention relates to scrapers suitable for scraping wood or glass or for removing from hard, smooth surfaces paint, paper or other substances adhering thereto; and the main object of the invention is to provide a holder in which a suitable straight edged blade, such a the blade of the Gillette safety razor, may be placed and effectively held for the purpose indicated and which may also be sheathed when the tool is not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a scraping tool of the character described which comprises few parts, all of which may be made from metal stampings except the blade, and which by reason of its simplicity and design is well adapted for quantity production at comparatively low cost.
Further and more limited objects of the invention will a pear as the description proceeds and by reihrence to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my device with the sheath positioned so as to cover the cutting ed e of the blade; Fig. 2 is a view similar to ig. 1 and taken from the opposite side thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a cortical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a metal stamping, one end of which is shaped to rovide a handle and the opposite end jo'f which'is expanded laterally to form a flattened portion on which a blade 2, such as a Gillette safety razor blade, may be secured. The flattened portion has a pair of oppositely disposed tongues 3-and 4 cut therefrom and bent upwardly as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 4. The flattened rtion also has an opening 5 therein and is provided with a plurality of embossed portlons 6 immediately adjacent the opening 5.
Arranged within the opening 5 is a threaded stud 7 which is spot welded to the embossed portions 6. The head of the stud 7 is engaged by and held against displace ment by the embossed portions 6 and these embossed portions are fused during the weldin operation. In this manner the stud is fi y secured in place and held in pro r alignment. The embossed portions '6 25:0 Serveto prevent the flattened end portion from being burned during the welding operation. The Gillette razor blade 2 is secured over the stud 7 and the tongues 3 and 4 project through the openings in the blade, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. Secured over the top of the blade is a reversible plate or guard 8, one end of which is bent downwardly as shown at 9 to protect the cutting edge of the-blade. A knurled nut 10 issecured over the threaded end of the stud 7 and firmly clamps the blade in place. It will be clear that when the sheath or guard 8 is reversed from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the cutting edge of the blade will be exposed.
It will now be clear that I have provided a tool of the character described which accomplishes the object of the invention as hereinbefore stated. Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention andI wish my invention to be limited only -in accordance with the scope of the ap ended claims.
aving thus described my invention, what i I claim is:
1. A scraper of the character set forth comprising a sheet metal stamping having a flattened portion one edge of which is straight and a handle, a pair of tongues cut out of said flattened portion and bent up:
wardly therefrom, a screw spot welded to said flattened portion at a plurality of points and projecting upwardly therefrom, a blade secured over said screw and tongues and having its cutting edge projectin beyond said straight edge and arallel t ereto a guard secured over said lade and holdlng the same in place, said guard being reversible and'having a downturned edge adapted to project over and protect the cutting edge of said blade when secured in one sition and to uncover the cutting edge 0 said blade when secured in another position and means for holding said guard in place.
2. A scraper of the character set forth comprising a sheet metal stamping having one end expandedlaterally to form a flab tened portion and its opposite end shaped to define a handle, one edge of said flattened portion being straight and disposed at right an les to the axis of the handle, a screw we ded to said flattened portion at a plurality of points and projecting upwardly therefrom, said flattened portion having a pair of spaced tongues cut out and bent'upwardly therefrom, a blade secured over said studs and having one edge projecting beyond and parallel to said straight edge and a guard secured over said stud and projecting tongues, said guard being reversible wherebythe same may be secured in a position to protect the cutting edge of said blade and means for holding said guard in place.
3. A scraper of the character described comprising a handle formed from a single piece of metal, said late being extended laterally to form a attened portion at the front end thereof and having a straight edge, said flattened portion having a pair of spaced studs cut out and bent upwardly therefrom, a blade secured over said studs and having its front edge projecting beyond and parallel with the edge of said flattened portion, and a guard secured over said blade, said guard being reversible whereby the same may be secured in a position to protect the cutting edge of said blade and means for securing said guard against displacement.
4. A scraper of the character set forth comprising a metal stamping having a flattened portion and a handle, one edge of said flattened portion being straight, a centrally disposed opening in said flattened portion, said flattened portion having a plurality of embossed portions thereon adjacent said opening, said flattened portion also having a plurality of spaced tongues cut out and bent upwardly therefrom, a screw projecting through said opening and having its head spot welded to said embossed portions, a blade secured over said screw and tongues and having one edge projecting beyond and parallel to said straight edge, a guard secured over said blade, said guard being movable to a position to protect the cutting edge of said blade and means for securing said guard in place.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
