RAZOR-BLADE HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that 1, JOHN H. COWAN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Razor-Blade Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to holders for safety-razor blades;. and the primary object is to provide a blade;holder which is well adapted to its purpose, and the handle of which may be used interchangeably in connection with the improved blade holder and in connection with a safety-razor.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved blade-holder with a blade clamped therein; Fig. 2, a similar View showing the handle detached and the holder in open condition; Fig. .3, a longitudinal sectional view of the blade-holder; Fig. 4, a transverse section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a front elevational view of a hair-trimmer which may be adapted to use as a safetyrazor by employing the handle shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 6, a central vertical sectional'view of the device shown in Fig. 5, the parts being shown separated.

In the construction illustrated, A designates a clamping-member equipped at one end with a tubular threaded socket A which has its inner end intersected by a longitudinal slot 1 parallel with the member A; A a companion clamping-member which has its outer end connected, by a perpendicular pivot, or rivet, 2, to the outer' end of thmember A; and A, a handle, or shaft, which is provided at its inner end with a reduced,threaded portion 3, which ends in a tapered point 3*.

The screw-portion 3 of the handle A is adapted to screw into the socket Afand the tapered point is adapted to engage the free or inner end of the swinging clamping member A. The member A is provided at its free end with an extension 4 adapted to enter the slot 1; and this extension is provided in its end with a notch 5, adapted to be engaged by the point 3 of the screw-portion of the handle. The member A is further provided near its free end with a finger-piece 6, enabling the member to be swung to the open position.

Specification of Letters Patent.

The clamping members Aand A preferably comprise resilient strips of steel. The strip "A has its inner end entered in the slot 1, which is made thick enough to accommodate both strips; and the inner end of the member A is firmly secured to the socket A as by welding, soldering, or the like, giving virtually an integral construction.

The holder described is adapted to clampingly secure a razor-blade B, to enable the blade to be honed; or, if desired, the device assembled as shown in Fig. 1, may be used as an ordinary razor.

The fixedly secured clamping member A is preferably provided with upwardlystruck lugs 7 adapted to extend through perforations 7 with which the blade B is provided. The swinging clamping member A may hzWG corresponding embossments 7 affording depressions on the inner side of the member corresponding with the lugs 7 The combination hair-trimmer and safetyrazor shown in Figs. 5 and 6 comprises, in addition to the blade B, a main plate C provided at its upper portion with a forwardlyinclined handle C; a comb-plate D; a V- form guard E provided with a threaded central socket; and a clamping screw F. The

main plate is provided with a central vertical slot 8 and with flanking vertical slots 8. The clamping screw F is provided with a screw-portion 9 and a clamping shoulder 9 The clamping screw is adapted to extend through the slot 8, through a central perforation 10 in the blade, through a central perforation 11 in the comb-plate D, and to screw into the threaded central socket 12 of the V-form guard E. The clamping wing of the V-form guard is provided with interlock lugs 13 which extend through suitable perforations in the comb-plate D, through perforations 7 of the blade B, and through the interlock slots 8 of the main plate. The main plate 0 and the comb-plate are provided at their lower portions wlth teeth. The blade B is interposed between the main plate and the comb-plate; and the parts are securely clamped together by the clamping screw F. The parts may be adjusted vertically with relation to the main plate to allow the teeth of the main plate to project such distance as is desired below the cutting edge of the blade, thereby adapting the device to use as a hair-trimmer. When it is desired to use the device as a safety-razor, the handle A may be substituted for the Patented F eb.17,1920.

clamping screw F, and the parts may be so adjusted that the cutting edge of the blade will benear the extremities of the teeth of the main plate C. The handle A will serve to enable the device to be used as a safetyrazor with facility. When the device is used for hair-trimming purposes, the clamping screw F takes the place of the handle A and the forwardly-inclined handle A is used for'manipulating the device. It may be added that the clamping Wing of the guard-plate E and the comb-plate are preferably provided with suitable interlocking flanges, in addition to the interlock lugs described. It is unnecessary, however, to describe the construction in greater detail.

It is preferred to have the strips A and A suificiently thin and resilient to enable the extremity 4 of the member A to be formed under pressure into the slot 1, so that the blade will be firmly'clamped between the clamping members; and when the handle A is applied to the blade-holder, the point 3 will engage the notch 5, so that the parts will be firmly secured together. It is quite desirable that at least one of the clamping members shall be quite resilient, and it is convenient to form both clamping members of thin strips of steel, which are resilient.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but .the appended claims should be construed as broadly .as permissible, in view of the prior art.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A razor-blade holder, comprising a clamping-member equipped at one end with a socket and a groove intersecting said socket, a companion clamping-member pivotally connected at one end to the free end of said first-named clamping-member and having its inner end received by said groove, and a handle having a portion adapted to enter said socket and engage and secure the swinging clamping-member.

2. A razor-blade holder, comprising a clamping-member equipped at one end with a fixedly secured threaded socket and a groove intersecting said socket, a companion clamping-member pivotally connected at one end to the free end of said first-named clamping-member and having its inner. end received by said groove, and a handle having a reduced threaded portion screwed into said socket and having its extremity engaging and securingthe swinging clamping-member.

3. A razor-blade holder, comprising a clamping-strip having at one end an integral threaded socket and a groove extending through the inner end of said socket in a plane parallel with said strip, a companion clamping-strip having its inner end received in said groove, said inner-end having a notch in alinement with the bore of said socket, a perpendicular pivot connecting the outer ends of said clan'iping-strips,

, and a handle having a threaded inner end portion screwed into said socket and having a point engaging said notch.

4. A razor-blade holder comprising a pair of thin resilient steel strips which are pivotally connected at one end, one of said strips having its other end equipped with a threaded socket provided at its inner end with an intersect-ing groove which is parallel with the strip and adapted to receive the extremity of the other strip, and a handle having a threaded portion screwed into said socket and engaging a notch in the end of the swinging strip.
