AprillS, 1937. Y R. A. WILSON zmww HAND TOOL 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 7 Filed Feb. 19, 1936 Invenlor Wilorneys R/t Wilson Patented Apr. 13, 1937 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates broadly to hand tools and the object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character which may be used either as a file, rasp or analogous abrasive tool and which also can be used as a sharpener for knives and analogous elements.
Briefly the invention consists in the provision of a handle equipped member provided with means for securing emery paper or analogous 10 abrasive material thereto whereby the tool may be used for any of the above suggested purposes.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the tool.
Figure 2 is a top edge view thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a clamping rod.
Figure 4 is a detail view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 2, and
Figures 6, '7 and 8 are trans-verse sectional views taken substantially on the lines 6-6, 1! and 88 respectively of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the tool comprises an elongated head 5 that is substantially V-shaped in cross section and is formed integral with a handle 6. Head 5 and handle 6 are preferably stamped or otherwise formed from a single blank of metal suitably cut, shaped and dimensioned to provide as aforementioned the head 5 substantially V-shaped in cross section and the handle 3 E which is of substantially tubular form as will be noted from a study of Figure 8.
The head 5 is adapted to have disposed about the outer side thereof a sheet I of emery paper or other abrasive material, the longitudinal free 40 edges of which are folded inwardly into the open side of the head 5 and over the longitudinal edges of the sides of the head 5 as clearly shown in Figure 6.
The sheet 1 is clamped in position on the head through the medium of a clamping bar 8 that is adapted to be received within the open side of the head 5 between the sides of the head and the inwardly folded end edges of the sheet I in a manner to coact with the sides of the head for clamp- 50 ing the folded edges of the sheet 1 therebetween as shown for example in Figure 6.
The clamp-ing bar 8 is secured to a block 9 through the medium of a pin or stud l whereby the bar 8 may be rotated relative to the block 9 55 so that either pair of opposed sides of the bar 8,
it being noted that the bar 8 is substantially rectangular in cross section, may be employed for clamping purposes, and as will be required due to the thickness of the sheet I to insure a positive clamping of the folded edges of the sheet between the bar 8 and the sides of the head 5.
The block 9 is pivoted as at l I between the sides of the head at the handle equipped endof the head, the pivot pin ll extending at right angles tothe pin l0, pins l0 and ll and block 9 thus 10 serving as a swivel connection between the clamping bar 8 and the head 5, permitting the clamping bar 8 to be rotated relative to the block I as previously explained, and also to rotate with the block from the full line position shown in Figure 5 to the dotted line position shown in said figure or vice versa.
It will be apparent that with the abrasive element 1 secured in this quick detachable manner on the head 5 of the tool said tool may be used either as a file, a rasp or analogous abrasive tool, or the surface 1 may be employed as a sharpening surface for knives or the like, the tool of the invention being easily held in one hand, handle 6 being of a suitable shape and size as will be appreciated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, an elongated head provided at one end with a handle, said head being substantially V-shaped in cross section, and providing a pair of sides connected together at one longitudinal edge thereof, and an abrasive sheet disposed about said head and having longitudinal edge portions folded inwardly of the head over the free edges of said sides, and a clamping bar swivelly connected at one end with said head adjacent one end of the latter, said clamping bar being insertable between the free edges of the sides of said head to force the 40 abrasive sheet into tight engagement with said edges.
2. In a device of the character described, an elongated head provided at one end with a handle, said head being substantially V-shaped in cross section, and providing a pair of sides connected together at one longitudinal edge thereof, and an abrasive sheet disposed about said head and having longitudinal edge portions folded inwardly of the head over the free edges of said sides, means cooperating with the sides of the head and the inwardly folded edge portions of said sheet for detachably securing the latter to the head, said means including a clamping bar adapted to be accommodated within the head between the sides of said head, and means swivelly connecting said clamping bar at one end thereof with the sides of the head at one end of the head.
3. In a device of the character described, an elongated head provided at one end with a handle, said head being substantially V-shaped in cross section, and providing a pair of sides connected together at one longitudinal edge thereof, an abrasive sheet disposed about said head and havthe head over the free edges of said sides, means cooperating with the sides of the head and the inwardly folded edge portions of said sheet for detachably securing the latter to the head, said means including a clamping bar adapted to be accommodated within the head between the sides of said head, means swivelly connecting said clamping bar at one end thereof with the sides of the head at one end of the head, said clamping bar being substantially rectangular in cross section as and for the purpose specified.
