Be it known that I, (hurrinn A. CumsrorrlnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco. in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Paper- Hangers Knife Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

The general object ofthe invention is to provide an adjustable guard for the blade of a (paper hangers knife, and to adapt the guar to guide the blade when trimming wall paper transversely or longitudinally to fit into the corners of a room, or upon the top of a baseboard, or arounda door casing.

The invention further proposes to adapt the guard to provide means for forcing the paper into the corner between two adjacent walls simultaneously with the cutting of the paper, and also to adapt the guard or cooperate with the knife blade to function as a slitting shear.

The invention still further proposes to provide a device that is adapted for easy attachment to the standard form of paper han ers knife.

T above objects are secured in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing and .in which:

Briefly described, my invention comprises a device or attachment which clamps to the handle of a paper hangers knife and functions as a smoothing guard for pressing. wall.

This yoke is split to fit handles of slightly varying diameter, and has a pair of dependent ears 5. against the sides of which the body of my device clamps by a relatively large screw or rivet 11 so as to secure'a very firm frictional joint thereon.

The jaws taper forwardly and as seen in Figure 1 also taper downwardly and in the sectional view are shown to include in their downwardly tapering form less than a right angle so that when pressed into a corner of the wall the jaws will not strike the walls of the room to thereby interfere with the knife blade cutting the pa er in the extreme corners but will gui e the blade against both angles of the Wall and permit working in narrow angle corners or unusual depressions in ordinary corners.

.In using the tool it is gripped by the handle and drawn in a direction awa from the blade while pressing the roun ed web 7 against the paper to force it into the corner continually in advance of the cutting portion of the blade, the paper lying in a relative plane as indicated by the line A-A.

The guard is ad'ustable to cooperate with dilferent sized bla es and to compensate for wear on the part of the blade with which it may be used. In this connection a screw 8 is provided which is adjustable through a nut 9 fixed to'the shank of the device and having a head bearing against a portion. of

the handle or clamp, whlle a hole 10 in the shank permits passage of the screw end.

The screw is more easily adjusted by simply winging the device away rom the blade on its pivotal joint 11, and when sharlpening the blade the device is swung clear ack along the handle as indicated by the dotted.

The device also functions with the cutting edge of the blade to form a pair of slitting shears for the paper, a function gained by adjusting the screw 8 so that the guards will only close to the osition C so that the angular juncture o the top of the jaws and. the cutting edge of the blade forms the slitting shears for pushing through the paper.

I claim:

1. A device of the character. described adapted for attaching to the handle of a knife, and provided with a rounding guard overhanging the edge of the knife for forcing paper into a corner in cutting the same with the knife.

2. In a device of the character described, a clamp adapted for clamping to the handle of a knife, a guard hingedl connected to the clamp, and means for ad iustably limiting the hinged movement of the guard.

3. A. guard for a paper hangers knife comprising a longitudinally tapered recessed .ly tapered recessed portion ada ted for receiving the edge portion of the nife blade, a support ada ted for connection to the knife, means adjustably connecting the recessed portion to the support, and means carried by one of the cooperate with the knlfe to secure the recessed portion in various positions of adjustment with respect to the cutting edge of the knife blade.
