PUTTY-KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application led August 28, 1909. Serial No. 515,092.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it knownthat I, EDWARD E. KosoHKn, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Putty Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in putty knives and refers particularly to a hand tool or knife adapted to enable a glazier to work rapidly and accurately in laying putty on windows.
One of the objects of the invention is the construction of a putty knife having a beveled guide, whereby a certain amount of putty can be laid on the window in a proper manner.
Another' object of the invention is the construction of a put-ty knife having an adjustable guide thereon whereby the amount of putty that is to be laid on a window can be readily regulated.
With the above and other objects in view the invention embraces certain combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the device, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device, Figa?) is a transverse sectional View of the device taken through the guide, and Fig. 4t is a top plan view of the device.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention 1 denotes a thin knife blade which is formed with an angular end 2 having beveled scraping or cutting edges 3 and 4.-, on opposite sides thereof. The knife blade l is provided with a longitudinal slot 5, located near the end 2. The body of the knife blade 1 is formed with parallel sides so that it can readily be grasped by a hand.
A guidek 6, consisting of a block of metal having integral side projections 7 and S, spaced apart so as to form a recess 9, is adjustably secured to the knife blade 1 by means of a clamping screw 10, which extends through an opening in the guide 6 and through the slot 5. The guide and the screw are held in adjustable position on the knife blade 1 by means of a nut 11, which' is threaded on the end of screw 10. The head 12 of the screw l0 is formed square and is disposed in a countersunk opening in the guide 6, whereby the same will be held against turning. The guide 6 is provided with a beveled forward underside or end 13, which is adapted to ride on the putty and lay the same firmly against the window sash and the window.
In use the forward or angular end'of the blade l, which projects outwardly of the guide 6, is placed against the outer side of the window frame or sash, after the putty has beenl once laid in a rough condition on the sash against the window pane, and the guide 6 is placed on the putty and moved thereover so as to effectively lay the same against said window pane and sash. As the forward underside of the guide 6 is beveled to Iallow just the proper angle and amount of putty little skill is required in properly handling the tool, the main thing needed to be borne in mind is vthat the forward angular end of the putty knife blade should be held flush against the outer side of the window sash or pane. The bevel of the guide being arranged to allow a standard amount of putty to be laid on the window, the edges of the guide scraping the excess therefrom. After the putty has been once laid on the window the rough places may be finished, and the corners finished off by applying the forward angular part of the blade 1 to said places, and manipulating the blade so the putty is properly finished off.
It will be seen that the tool enables a glazier to minimize in the amount of putty used and to evenly apply the putty all around the edges of the window pane with the exercise of little or no skill.
Having described my invention` I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination, a putty tool having a knife blade formed with an angular end having beveled sides and provided with a putty guide adjustably secured to said end.
2. In combination, a putty knife having an angular end formed with beveled sides and with a longitudinal slot located near tion Aof the angular end and formed with.
a forward angular underside, and a screw 10 having a nut threaded thereon extending through the guide and the slot, said screw having a squared head disposed in a countersunl; opening in the guide.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature7 in presence of two witnesses.
EDVARD ERDMAN KOSGHKE.
