This invention relates to an implement, which is designed and constructed for removing putty from window sashes, and has for its primary object to provide an instrument, whereby the hardened putty may be easily and quickly removed from the sash when a new pane of glass is to be inserted therein.
Another important object of this invention resides in the provision of means for adjusting the depth of insertion of the blade of the knife or implement.
These and ancillary objects and structural features of merit are attained by this invention, a preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an implement constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view, illustrating the same in operative position upon one of the bars of the sash;
Figure 4 is a similar side elevational view, and
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, this invention generally designated by the character reference l0 includes an elongated rectangular shank l2, which terminates at one end in a blade portion I4, having the opposed longitudinally extending marginal edges thereof beveled and sharpened as at l6 and I8. A blade extension 20 extends laterally from the blade end of the shank and is disposed vertically thereto at right angles. The blade extension 20 is formed with opposing blade edges 22 and the upper unattached end thereof is beveled and sharpened as at 24.
Handle sections 26 and 28 are secured on the upper face and lower face of the shank, at the end thereof. The handle sections are secured thereto by fastening means 30.
With respect to Figures 3 and 4, it will be noted that this implement is provided for removing putty 32 from a window sash 34. Means is provided for controlling the depth of insertion of the blade and of the implement, the means carried against the sash and providing a bearing surface for the implement. The means preferably includes a bolt 36, having a kerf head 38. The bolt is vertically disposed through an elongated longitudinally extending slot 40 formed in the shank 12, adjacent the blade end M. A wing nut 42 is detachably and threadedly engaged on the externally threaded shank of the bolt and is disposed on the upper face of the shank. An enlarged roller or washer 44 is disposed between the head 38 and the underside or face of the shank. The roller being rotatably received concentrically on a smaller washer 46. In operation, it can be seen that the implement is designed for removing putty from the rabbet at the left of the sash member and for removing the putty from the sash when broken glass is to be removed and the sash prepared and cleaned for the insertion of the new glass. The implement is inserted on the sash and the blade is moved along the sash, the opposing edges of the blade sections completely removing the putty 32 from the sash. As the implement is moved along the sash, the roller 44 bears on the outer lower surface of the sash and provides the bearing surface for the movement of the implement. It can be appreciated that the adjustability of the bearing surface enables the depth of insertion of the blade to be controlled. Further, the roller, being rotatably held by the bolt 36 or similar fastening means will not mar the appearance of the sash, if the same is formed of wood or like impressionable material.
Thus, it can be seen that there is provided a novel and durably constructed implement, which may be efiiciently and effectively employed for removing putty from sashes or may be employed for any similar and analogous uses.
Of course, since many other modifications and purposes of this invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art, it is to be understood that certain changes and details of design and structure may be carried out within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A putty removing instrument comprising a shank having a blade at one end of said shank and a handle at the other end of said shank,
and means adjustably slidably carried by the HARVEY U. HURT.
