(Cl. 30123) This invention relates to a tool for removing putty from window frames for the purpose of replacing panes of glass in a window, and more particularly to a tool which is designed for penetrating and cutting away putty which has become hardened and scraping the window frame clear prior to the replacement of putty thereon.

In the replacement of broken window panes, the removal of putty from around the broken pane is often a troublesome and time consuming task because of the extreme hardness and durability of the putty which usually increases with age. The removal of the old putty is also made more difiicult by reason of the construction of the window, the putty being located in the angle between the glass pane and the frame into which it is difficult to insert a cutting blade and hold the same in a convenient position to cut away the putty.

The present invention has for an important object the provision of a putty removing implement embodying cutter elements which are positioned to be easily held in engagement with the putty in the angle between the glass and the window frame, and which are located to penetrate the hardened putty and break the same away to permit the convenient use of other means for cutting and scraping the putty.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a putty removing tool having putty cutting and scraping means which is constructed to permit the cutting and scraping away of putty from the angle between a window frame and pane close to the apex of the angle whereby the putty may be cleanly and completely removed to facilitate the ready removal and replacement of the glass.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a putty removing implement including an elongated handle portion having at one end putty penetrating blades for breaking away hardened putty and cutting means disposed for positioning against the window frame in the angle between the frame and glass for cutting away the putty, and also having at its other end scraper means positioned for use in scraping the putty off of the window frame to leave a clean surface to which new putty may be applied.

Another object of the invention is to provide a putty removing implement which is of simple designed and rugged construction and wherein the cutting and scraping elements are positioned to greatly facilitate the use of the implement in removing putty from the corners between a window frame and the glass panes carried thereby.

The above and other important objects and advantages of the invention may best be understood from the following detailed description, constituting a specification of the invention, when considered in conjunction with the annexed drawings, wherein FIGURE 1 is a perspective view illustrating the implement of the invention;

FIGURE 2 is a top plan view of the same; and

FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the same.

Referring now to the drawings in greater detail the putty removing implement or tool of the invention comprises an elongated handle 10, which may be of any convenient cross-sectional shape, such as the rectangular shape shown, to enable the same to be firmly gripped by the user in applying the cutting and scraping means 3,138,867 Patented June 30, 1964 of the implement to the frame of a window or other similar structure from which putty is to be removed in carrying out a glazing operation. The handle 10 is preferably formed of strong and rigid material such as steel or other suitable material capable of resisting bending under pressure loads applied to the same in use. The handle is preferably provided with flat faces at its opposite ends for the convenient attachment thereto of the cutting and scraping elements of the tool.

At one end of the handle 10, flat, rectangularly shaped clamping or back-up members 12 are secured to the opposite fiat faces of the handle, as by means of screws 14 extending through suitable aligned perforations in the members and handle and threadably secured to one of the members. Flat, generally rectangular, scraper elements 16, are positioned against the flat faces on opposite sides of the handle between the clamping members 12 and the handle, which elements are provided with perforations through which the screws 14 are extended. The elements 16 extend laterally beyond the side edges of the handle and the clamping members 12 and are formed with toothed projecting edge portions 18 which extend longitudinally to the adjacent end edge of the handle whereby the teeth of the elements will be positioned for use in scraping away putty from a window frame within the angle between the frame and pane. It will also be apparent that because of the relatively large area of contact of the elements 16 with the handle and the clamping members 12, the scraper elements will be very rigidly held on the handle.

At the other end of the handle 10 a clamping element 20 is provided, similar to the elements 12 and similarly attached to the handle, as by means of screws 22, to securely hold a putty penetrating blade 24 between the handle and member. A clamping and support member 26 is also provided, positioned opposite the member 20 and secured to the handle by the screws 22, which support member extends laterally beyond one edge of the handle and is formed at its outer end with an integral support portion 28 extending at right angles to the general plane of the handle and which is slotted centrally, as indicated at 30 in FIGURE 3, to receive a lug 32 of a cutter blade 34, by which the blade is pivotally secured to the portion 28 in the slot 30, as by means of a pivot pin 36, for rocking movement relative thereto. The blade 34 is generally fiat, having a flat outer face 38 positioned for engagement with the face of a window frame in the angle between the frame and pane, and also has bevelled end faces providing

46 and 48 respectively which extend to different distances laterally beyond the edge of the handle opposite the cutter 34, in position to penetrate the sloping surface of the hardened putty to allow the tool to be used in breaking away portions of the putty preliminary to the cutting and scraping operations to be performed by the cutter 34 and the scrapers 16. 46 and 48 they will conform to the sloping exposed surface of the hardened putty so that the handle may be held in a position for the convenient application of pressure thereto to cause the penetrating edges to cut into the putty so that portions of the same may be readily broken away to allow the other operating portions of the tool to be used to clear away the putty.

In making use of the implement of the invention,

46 and 48 engaged with the sloping, exposed surface of the putty while holding the handle as nearly parallel to the window frame as possible and drawing the cutting edges longitudinally along the putty, while applying pressure to the cutting edges, thus causing them to penetrate and break away the hardened putty. When a start has thus been made in the removal of the putty, the blade 34 may be placed with its flat face 38 in contact with the frame where the putty has been removed, and drawn longitudinally along the frame to cut away the putty with the

40 and 42. Because of the pivotal attachment of the blade 34 to the support 28, the blade may rock slightly relative to the support so that the blade will adjust itself with the surface 38 lying fiat against the putty carrying surface of the window frame. Under some conditions either of the

40 or 42 of the cutter 34 may be engaged with the frame with the blade position substantially at right angles to the puttied surface to scrape the putty away.

When the putty has been partly or mostly removed from the frame the cutting teeth of the elements 16 may be held in engagement with the frame and pulled longitudinally along the putty carrying surface to thoroughly clean the same. The dual arrangement of the toothed portions of the elements 16 being somewhat spaced apart are especially effective for cleaning the surface of the frame preparatory to the re-glazing of the same.

It will also be apparent that the various elements of the device may be easily removed and replaced when dulled or otherwise rendered ineffective.

It will thus be seen that the invention provides a putty removing implement which is of strong construction and economical manufacture and which is designed to effectively remove hardened putty from windows for the purpose of reglazing the same.

The invention is disclosed herein in connection with a certain preferred embodiment of the same, but it will be understood that this is intended by way of example only and that various modifications of the parts and their arrangement may be made within the spiirt of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus clearly shown and described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A putty removing tool comprising an elongated handle, a laterally extending support at one end of the handle, an elongated blade pivotally mounted mediate its ends on said support in a position substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the handle for rocking movement relative to the support and having end cutting edges disposed at right angles to said axis,

2. A putty removing tool comprising an elongated handle, a laterally extending support at one end of the handle, an elongated blade pivotally mounted mediate its ends on said support in laterally spaced relation to and extending substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the handle for rocking movement relative to the support and having end cutting edges.

3. A putty removing tool comprising an elongated, flat handle, fiat cutter elements each positioned with one side face thereof in contact with one side face of the handle at one end of the handle and having a laterally extending, longitudinally disposed cutting edge portion spaced from one side edge of the handle, one of said cutting edge portions extending laterally outwardly from the handle beyond the other of said cutting edge portions and means securing said cutter elements and handle rigidly together.

Claims

1. A PUTTY REMOVING TOOL COMPRISING AN ELONGATED HANDLE, A LATERALLY EXTENDING SUPPORT AT ONE END OF THE HANDLE, AN ELONGATED BLADE PIVOTALLY MOUNTED MEDIATE ITS ENDS ON SAID SUPPORT IN A POSITION SUBSTANTIALLY AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF THE HANDLE FOR ROCKING MOVEMENT RELATIVE TO THE SUPPORT AND HAVING END CUTTING EDGES DISPOSED AT RIGHT ANGLES TO SAID AXIS.
