- C, flaZaJA a J21 PUTTYING-TOOLL Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
Application filed January 25, 1921. Serial No. 439,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HALASKA, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Puttying-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to glaziers tools, and more particularly to a tool designed for facilitating the applying of putty in window frames to securely maintain the glass or window panes in position.
An object of the invention is to provide a putty tool which comprises a relatively long putty engaging blade for smoothing the putty binder, and which is carried by a suitable carrying body arranged for engagement with the window sash portion. The sash will form a support and guide for the body during operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a glaziers tool as specified, which light in weight, simple, durable, and which will materially facilitate the puttying of windows.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following description and in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a window showing the improved tool associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved glaziers tool.
Fig. 3 is a cross section through the tool.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved puttying or glaziers tool comprises a body 1 formed of sheet metal, preferably sheet steel to provide the neces sary resiliency thereto to insure proper working of the tool. The body 1, is rectangular in shape and has its ends 2 rip-turned and rounded as shown at 3. The up-turned ends 2 are perforated as at 4 for receiving screws 5 which connect the handle 6 to the body 1. The handle 6 is preferably formed of wood or analogous material and is round ed to permit smooth firm gripping thereof.
The putty applying and smoothing blade 7 extends longitudinally along one edge of the body 1, at an acute angle to the body, it being angled with respect to the body to provide the desired angular outer surface to the putty binder indicated at A as it is applied to the window frame B for holdin the pane in place. The ends of the blade are cut at an angle as shown at 8 to permit proper forming of the putty binder in the corners of the window frame.
In use, the putty is roughly applied to the window frame in the usual manner. The improved tool is placed with the outer surface of the body 1 engaging the frame B and the tool is drawn along the frame with the blade 7 engaging the putty for securely pressing the putty in place and shaping it. In using the tool on windows having rounded portions or corners the end portions of the blade 7 may be used for smoothing the putty. It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
-1. As a new article of manufacture, a
glaziers tool comprising a body having upturned ends, a handle secured to said upturned ends and a smoothing blade extending longitudinally along one edge of said body at an acute angle to the body.
2. In a glaziefis tool, a sheet metal body, having a putty smoothing blade extending longitudinally along one edge of said body at an acute angle thereto.
3. In aglazier s tool, a sheet metal body, and a putty smoothing blade extending longitudinally along one edge of said body at an acute angle thereto, the ends of said blade being cut at an angle.
4. In a glaziers tool, a sheet metal body having its end portions rip-turned, a handle detachably secured to said up-turned ends, a putty smoothing blade formed along one edge of said body and bent at an acute angle to the body, said handle being spaced from the adjacent side of said body, a said putty smoothing blade having its ends out at acute angles, to its sides decreasing the length of the outer edge of the plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature.
CHARLES HALA SK JR.
